Complete with all 65 maps called for, each measuring ab. 19 x 26 cm. A great part of the maps have some background shadowing from the printers ink, mainly due to the fact, that this is the third Ruscelli-edition, where the plates have been used before. 3 printer's wood-cut devices and 20 smaller and larger woodcuts in the text. 2 woodcuts with Ptolemy shown observing.‎

‎Third edition of Ruscelli's translation from Venice, 1561. The maps are printed from the same plates, with the exception of Ptolemy's map of the world, for which Malomba had returned to the original conical projection of Ptolemy. Moreover, one map is added: the map of ""Territorio di Roma"". In general the maps are enlarged copies of Gastaldi's maps from the edition of 1548 which came out in 8vo. The Ruscelli translation contains an important innovation, namely the division of the world map into two parts, one for the Old World and one for the New, as seen on the plate ""Tavola Universal"", depicting the 2 hemispheres. The atlas contains 27 ptolemaic maps and 38 new. 1 World, 1 Hemisphere, 10 Europe, 4 Africa, 12 Asia and 38 others. 10 of the maps relate to America.Philipps I:380. Sabin 66505. ‎Edition originale qui regroupe tous les articles publiés par Ruffer sur ses recherches histologiques et pathologiques sur les momies égyptiennes, de 1909 à 1920, publiés dans différentes revues savantes ; cet ensemble forme la plus importante contribution sur ce sujet (Garrisson-Morton 2314). Né à Lyon en 1859 et mort au large de Salonique, Sir Ruffer est considéré comme le fondateur de la paléopathologie ; après des études à Oxford, il fit sa médecine à Londres et fut reçu docteur en médecine en 1889. Elève de Pasteur et Metchnikoff à l’Institut, il mena des travaux de recherche fructueux sur les infections, la diphtérie, les amibes, la mise au point d’un vaccin antidiphtérique, etc. C’est en 1896 qu’il fut nommé professeur de bactériologie à l’école de médecine du Caire ; et en 1907 qu’il va commencer à s’intéresser à l’état sanitaire des momies. Les deux coins inférieurs sont légèrement mâchés, sinon bel exemplaire dans l’ensemble, pour cet ouvrage fondamental.‎

Notes in pencil and textual corrections through the remainder in a second later hand. Contemporary calf red morocco spine label lettered in gilt decorated brass clasps page edges stained black. Rebacked with original spine laid down. A solid clean near fine copy. <br /> <br /> Intriguing copy of bookseller and publisher Manoah Sibley's 1757-1840 edition of the John Whalley English translation 1701 of Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos.  As with other works by Sibley the book was criticized for being inaccurate and containing errors as it was more or less an appropriation of the Whalley text Sibley having no access to the original Latin manuscripts.  Gardner in his Catalogue Raisoné states:<br /> <br /> "This translation is held in but little estimation and is comparatively worthless."<br /> <br /> <br /> However Sibley's importance in the revitalization of astrology in 19th century England is generally accepted due to his propagation of works by Ptolemy and Placidus de Titis through the wider public.  <br /> <br /> This stunning interleaved copy contains impeccably detailed illustrations diagrams and insightful notes regarding Ptolemy's work.  It was likely owned by a learned astrologer of the time and we posit perhaps even someone associated with publications in the science.  It is certainly a book worth further study.  <br /> <br /> ESTC T110939.  Gardner 1049.<br /> <br /> .
