First published by Chatto & Windus in 1971. Well-researched and vividly-written history of the legendary seaplane races from the first (Monaco, 1913) to the last (Calshot, 1931). Britain's success in the 1929 event (at Calshot) was due largely to a new Supermarine design powered by an equally innovative Rolls-Royce engine. A few years later this combination gave birth to a fighter aircraft named the Spitfire. Uncommon.

In 16, pp. 160 + (4). Br. ed. Scritto polemico in cui l'A. si dichiara contrario alla soppressione delle case di tolleranza sancito dalla legge Merlin entrata in vigore nel 1958. Scrive Polignone: 'i sintomi negativi gia' cominciano a farsi sentire. Il fenomeno s'e' acutizzato anche sui marciapiedi cittadini [...]. A Milano, epicentro del libertinaggio nordico, e dove le passeggiatrici nel giro di qualche mese sono raddoppiate, le strade rigurgitano di peripatetiche che 'battono' indisturbate'. Nella seconda parte dell'opera sono analizzati l'iter parlamentare della legge, la relazione Tozzi-Condivi, e le esperienze di altri stati europei, come la Francia, paese nel quale, su impulso dell'attivista ex prostituta Marthe Richard, gia' nel 1946 erano state chiuse la case di tolleranza.
