Spine repaired. Hardbound. Very good. Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Grande intellettuale del Novecento, su di lui in Italia è stato scritto molto poco, forse perché la sua estrema poliedricità ne ha fatto il più “inclassificabile” dei pensatori contemporanei. In questo volume l’autore mette in evidenza che i suoi ispiratori sono senz’altro Sade e Nietzsche, veri e proprio alter ego klossowskiani, nel loro tentativo di giungere ai limiti estremi del pensiero. Limite a cui Klossowski tende costantemente, proseguendo nella strada da loro tracciata, con la sua riflessione sulle forme (linguaggio, corpo, immagine...) e sulla necessità di scavarle e superarle. Prigione e varco al tempo stesso, le forme ci consentono una doppia possibilità: quella di rimanerne alla superficie, sulla loro soglia, o di andare oltre, immergendoci in esse – come fa Narciso quando vede la sua immagine riflessa sull'acqua – per vederne l’ambiguità, noi stessi. Questo testo è il contributo principale fornito da Herbert Marcuse alle ricerche su autorità e famiglia svolte dall'Institut für Sozialforschung di Francoforte. Compito specifico di Marcuse era la ricostruzione del rapporto di autorità e famiglia nella storia delle idee con particolare attenzione al contesto culturale tedesco (Lutero e Calvino, Kant, Hegel e Marx e la crisi del concetto di autorità borghese in Sorel e Pareto). Un'analisi particolarmente efficace delle contraddizioni strutturali della modernità capitalistica in cui il concetto di autorità è ambiguo (diviso tra libertà pratica o interiore dell'individuo e illibertà sociale). Nel rapporto autoritario la libertà e l'illibertà, l'autonomia e l'eteronomia sono quindi simultaneamente presenti, e sono congiunte nell'unica persona dell'oggetto dell'autorità. A partire dalla Riforma l'individuo è diventato una persona insieme libera (nell'interiorità cristiana) e non libera (in quanto membro del mondo esterno, quello della "concupiscenza").
