Helléniste de talent et héritier d'une dynastie d'imprimeurs, Henri Estienne (1531-1598) a trente-cinq ans lorsqu'il sort de ses presses de Genève ce livre unique, imprimé grâce aux largesses financières de son mécène Ulrich Fulger (1526-1584) apparenté à la puissante famille des banquiers d'Augsbourg. Le volume est composé dans le grand corps des " grecs du Roi ", dont les matrices avaient été apportées de Paris. Le format in-folio retenu en montre l'importance à ses yeux. En 1566, il est déjà l'éditeur des Tragédies complètes d'Eschyle et de l'édition princeps des Odes d'Anacréon. Il fera paraitre en 1572 le " Thesaurus Linguae Graecae ". Les " Poetae graeci principes " se présentent comme une anthologie de la poésie grecque, d'Homère à Pythagore. Elle est précédée d'une longue préface en latin (20 pp.), qui nous touche quand Henri Estienne remémore ses premiers pas d'helléniste, sa préférence pour le grec " qui literas Graecas ante Latinas disci debere censebant ". C'est le philologue qui parle, mais aussi l'amateur de poésie grecque, dont les charmes le séduisent comme le chant des Sirènes " ac Sirenum cantibus delinitus ". La première partie est consacrée aux poésies d'Homère (l'Iliade, l'Odyssée, Batrachomyomachie, Hymnes), qui représente la première édition critique des textes homériques, depuis l'édition princeps de 1488, et qui fera autorité pendant longtemps. Henri Estienne dit l'avoir établie à partir de toutes les éditions antérieures, au nombre de dix-huit, des commentaires d'Eustathe, ainsi que d'un " vetus exemplar ", manuscrit grec resté longtemps inconnu. Il a été retrouvé et identifié à la fin du XIXe siècle à la bibliothèque de Genève (le Genevensis graecus 44). Henri Estienne innove également dans cette édition en numérotant les vers. La seconde partie est dédiée à des uvres des poètes (Hésiode, Orphéus, Callimaque, Aratus, Nicander, Theocritus, Moschus, Bion, Dionysius, Coluthus, Tryphiodorus, Musaeus Theognis de Mégare, Phocylides, les " Aurea carmina " de Pythagore), incluant aussi des fragments en édition princeps de Solon, Tyrtée et Mimnerme. Les " Henrici Stephani annotationes " ont été reliées à la fin dans notre volume. Renouard déjà, plus récemment Fred Schreiber notaient qu'il était difficile de trouver des exemplaires des " Poetae graecae " dans une bonne condition. Notre exemplaire est dans un bel état : Il a été relié et restauré semble-t-il, (page de titre doublée, gardes blanches) autour des années 1780-1800. Une restauration récente de grande qualité a redonné tout son lustre à la reliure (la coiffe supérieure avait été abimée) et les dernières pages ou plus légèrement certains hauts de page de la deuxième partie restent marqués de traces d'humidité, sans nuire à la grande qualité de l'ensemble. Les pages 283-286 de la seconde partie, qui contiennent des poèmes dans une typographie très originale, comportent des traces de feuilles, semble-t-il. Des marginalia, en latin et surtout en grec, d'une fine écriture très lisible, sont présentes tout au long du volume, et notamment en marge des poèmes de Theognis de Médare. Belles marges : certaines marginalia tronquées prouvent que les marges étaient plus larges avant la reliure. La partie supérieure de la deuxième garde blanche porte un petit ex-libris daté de 1789 " D. Wyttenbach Amstelod[ami] ", qui correspondrait vraisemblablement à Daniel Wyttenbach (1746-1820), philologue réputé, professeur à Leyde et à l'Université d'Amsterdam " L'Athénée " et éditeur notamment de Platon.
