My Hero Hercules Tales of Ancient Lands series
Toronto: Annick Press 1975 "Hercules is cursed at his birth by Hera. Zeus's jealous wife resents the prediction that Zeus's half-mortal son would be a "king of kings" with remarkable strength. Jason a ten-year-old motherless mortal believes his life is cursed by his cowardly weak father Tellus. They live in a village where strength is valued over intellect. Although Jason greedily devours his father's stories of Hercules he finds transcriber Tellus' passion for history and all other stories pathetic. Skinny like his father Jason's greatest desire is to be like his hero Hercules. When a fire ignites the house a panicked Tellus chooses to protect his transcriber's hands rather than douse the blaze and as a result loses his life. Perhaps it is because Jason is the same age as Hercules' dead son that the god in the heavens responds to Jason's mournful pleas and offerings. Hercules visits Jason and takes him on visual journeys through episodes of his past filled with bravery blood . and evidence of Hercules' unthinking violent temper. After Hercules returns to the heavens he sends Jason one last test to determine whether Jason is worthy to travel with him. Jason searches for a token of Hercules' time on earth with a clue from his Grandfather. He labors in a field for a year growing in strength and stamina before he uncovers one of Hercules' old battle arrows. As a reward Hercules takes Jason with him on a death-defying adventure. Together they face the many challenges posed by King Eurystheus: Hercules and Jason skin the Nemean lion battle the many-headed watersnake of Hydra capture the elusive beautiful white deer of Cerynia and defy Herz's immortal trickery. Over time Jason grows inbravery as well as in compassion; he helps to save Hercules' life and comes to see his father Tellus more justly.". Soft Cover. New. Annick Press paperback

ROBERT MERRY'S MUSEUM. Three books containing vols. 5/6 7/8 9/10. January 1843 - Dec.1845
New York & Boston: D. Mead / Bradbury Soden & Co. 1845. First edition. Hardcover. Good. woodcuts. 8vo 280 pages half leather some tears some loss of text leaf 273/274 leaf 305/306 lacks half the leaf

Extensively illustrated with woodcuts - some full-page. Original songs with music. Established by Samuel G. Goodrich in 1841 this very popular children's periodical claimed a circulation of 13000 in 1852. The Museum was similar in many ways to Parley's Magazine which it absorbed in 1844 but contained more adventure and thrills than Parley's. The most important part of the sixteen-page magazine during Goodrich's editorship was that devoted to the tales of the famous "Parley"; these were moral and didactic but nevertheless very popular. "Parley" used stories of travels by balloon to teach geography as well as historical lore painlessly. Another prominent feature was a series of natural history articles illustrated with pictures of wild animals. Woodcuts musical pieces puzzles and poems were plentiful. D. One World, Ready or Not : The Manic Logic of Global Capitalism
528 pages including index. Exposes the myths and the realities of the global economy in terms of human struggle. Contends that the global economy is sowing 'creative destruction' everywhere: while making possible great accumulations of wealth, it is also reviving forms of human exploitation that characterized industry 100 years ago. Improvise and Dare : War in the Aegean 1943-1945
257 pages. Signed and inscribed by author upon title page. Index. Black and white photographic plates. "J.S. Guard has painstakingly researched published sources and original PRO records to produce an absorbing, definitive story of military opportunism and indiscretion; of extreme endurance punctuated by sudden, sharp action; and of clandestine, courageous enterprise and ingenuity in the idyllic setting of the Greek islands. An intriguing account of one of the least publicised campaigns of the war, this work examines all aspects of the campaign, makes impartial assessments... and dispels some of the myths and misstatements associated with it."
