Traité très complet, en 3 parties. 24 lithographies dont 8 sur double page. Cette première édition semble très rare. Le Katalog der Ornamentstich Sammlung de Berlin II n°33136 ne possède que la réédition de 1839. Quérard X, 111. ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE de l’auteur sur la page de garde : à M. Jollois Ingénieur en chef. Il s’agit de Jean-Baptiste Prosper Jollois (1776 - 1842), un ingénieur et archéologue qui fut membre de l’expédition en Égypte en 1798. En 1830 il sera nommé ingénieur en chef des travaux de la Seine. Jollois est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages et mémoires sur les antiquités du Loiret, des Vosges, sur l’archéologie égyptienne et sur Jeanne d’Arc.

First published by Roret in 1835 the work appeared again in this "Nouvelle édition" in 1839 with the same large format and an extensive suite of lithographed plates. Vergnaud presents the creation of gardens as an architectural art grounded in the study of terrain water planting views and circulation. The text moves from general principles to practical application addressing the selection and study of a site the nature of soils and water the use of plans and levels the organisation of walks and plantations and the pictorial handling of natural and built features. Vergnauds emphasis falls on composition in the full sense: the garden as a designed landscape whose effects depend on time growth perspective and the intelligent adjustment of architecture to nature. The plates include plans views and details drawn from major English landscapes such as Blenheim Chatsworth Stowe Windsor Richmond Longleat and Wilton together with French examples including Morfontaine Saint-Leu Beauregard Marly-le-Roi and Bougival. The suite also includes views from Ermenonville and the gardens of the Pitti Palace greenhouse details in France and England plans for public promenades and gardens and the plan of the farm at Aubetin. Several plates use folding or overlay elements to clarify changes of level layout or design sequence making the volume especially valuable as a practical visual manual. Narcisse Vergnaud was born in Orléans and trained in architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Antoine-Laurent-Thomas Vaudoyer. Active in Paris as an architect and designer of gardens Vergnaud is now often obscured in catalogues under the name Nicolas Vergnaud though contemporary and modern authority records identify him as Narcisse. His treatise places him within the French reception of English landscape gardening while retaining a strongly architectural understanding of design one in which plan elevation perspective horticulture and execution form part of a single discipline. On March 6 1945 after hearing rumors that his son John was writing a book about their stormy past Frank Lloyd Wright wrote a note asking him "What is this talk of a book Of all that I don't need and dread is more exploitation. Can't you drop it" John assured his father that he would like the book and sent him a copy on its publication March 29 1946. A few days later Frank Lloyd Wright returned it with numerous comments penciled in the margin responding to what his son had written and with a request that a new second copy be sent to him. John complied with the request but first transcribed not only all his father's comments into the clean copy in black pencil but also his own answers to them in red pencil. He also transcribed all these comments into a third copy again using colors to differentiate his comments from those of his father. This third copy is the basis for this new edition of John Lloyd Wright's book. The main text of this volume is a reprint of the 1946 edition along with marginal notes comments and corrections made by John Lloyd Wright and his father as well as explanatory notes and an introduction by Narciso G. Menocal. In the postscript Elizabeth Wright Ingraham John Lloyd Wright's daughter remembering her grandfather and father says that in this edition "what was a son's book becomes a father and son book."
