Fin dalla sua apparizione sulla scena letteraria, verso la fine del XII secolo, il Graal si presenta come un oggetto inafferrabile, in continua trasformazione: grande piatto contenente un'ostia, vaso in cui Giuseppe di Arimatea raccolse il sangue di Cristo, pietra discesa dal cielo. Ma le metamorfosi del Graal non finirono. Dopo una lunga eclisse, il mito fu recuperato da alcuni autori ottocenteschi, in particolare da Richard Wagner: il suo Parsifal è all'origine di un nuovo, vastissimo "ciclo del Graal", che comprende opere teatrali, narrative, storiche (o pseudostoriche), cinematografiche e altro. Sintesi di un ventennio di ricerche sulla letteratura cortese e cavalleresca e sui grandi miti che essa lasciò in eredità alla cultura europea, il volume offre una panoramica sull'evoluzione del mito del Graal nel medioevo e sul suo contesto letterario e religioso, proponendo anche un'indagine critica sulle sue riscritture e interpretazioni moderne e su molti luoghi comuni che circolano al suo riguardo.
