Four Language Passport for the Whaling Schooner Pedro Varela Signed by Ulysses S. Grant as President
The Pedro Varela crew mutinied in later years a event which is the subject of a book In the 1840s around the time Herman Melville was completing Moby Dick whaling was a booming worldwide business and the United States was the global behemoth. The U.S. whaling industry grew by a factor of fourteen between 1816 and 1850 and New Bedford Massachusetts accounted for half of America's whaling output. In 1846 the U.S. owned 640 whaling ships more than the rest of the world put together and tripled. Demand for New Bedford's haul came from all over the country. Sperm oil could lubricate fancy new machinery. Inferior whale oil could light up a room. Whale cartilage could hold together a corset or umbrella. At its height the whaling industry contributed $10 million in 1880 dollars enough to make it the fifth largest sector of the U.S. economy. In the 1870s however the industry started to decline as whale resources decreased and the price of whale oil fell as a result of increased petroleum production. Capitalists began to funnel their cash into other domestic industries notably railroads oil and steel. When New Bedford's whaling elite opened the city's first cotton mill and petroleum-refining plant the handwriting was on the wall. By the late 1890s the industry was virtually dead. Anthony P. Benton was a whaling ship owner and captain who plied the trade for decades. He was one of the last whaling hold-outs still searching for whales in 1900. The Schooner Pedro Varela was a whaling vessel out of New Bedford built in 1853. It was still active well into the 1910s. Its crew was fed up with an arduous voyage in 1910 and found a way to prematurely bring it to an end; they threw whaling equipment overboard. The book “Mutiny on the Pedro Varela†recount this tale. In 1876 Benton signed on to take the Pedro Varela on a whaling voyage to the Atlantic whaling grounds off South America. Document signed as President Washington November 4 1876 being a passport providing that “Leave and permission are hereby given to Anthony P. Benton master or commander of the Schooner called Pedro Varela of the burthen of 89 tons lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for the Atlantic Ocean and laden with Provisions stores and utensils for a whaling voyage to depart and proceed…on his said voyage…†The document is countersigned by Hamilton Fish as Secretary of State and by James Taylor Deputy Collector of the port of New Bedford. The passport is in four languages English Spanish French and Dutch as befits a ship’s traveling in international waters. Passports for whaling ships signed by Grant as President are rare which is hardly surprising considering that fewer whaling passports were being given out by the mid-1870s. This is our first and a search of public sale records going back over 40 years shows none having reached that marketplace since 1991 unknown

Framed Document Signed as ad interim Secretary of War
Washington 1867. unbound. 1 page on "War Department" letterhead 9.75 x 7.75 inches Washington November 6 1867 -- an uncommon partly printed document signed "U.S. Grant" as ad interim Secretary of War a post he held for only eight weeks informing Thomas J. Greggs: "You are hereby notified that the President of the United States has appointed you for gallant and meritorious services during the war a Captain by Brevet. Should the Senate at their next session advise and consent thereto you will be commissioned accordingly." Beautifully framed to 15.5 x 17.5 inches with a 4.5 x 3.75-inch copperplate portrait along with a tan matte and black-and-gold frame. The letter has horizontal folds and a small smudge in the left margin; overall a magnificent item in near fine condition. At the time that this document was signed President Andrew Johnson was undergoing Impeachment proceedings. A week earlier he compounded his problems by firing Secretary of War Stanton and convincing Grant to fill the Cabinet position. Two months later both houses of Congress determined that it was illegal to fire Stanton and that he should be reinstated immediately. Grant rather than to get caught up with the political controversy walked away from President Johnson - both men refusing to speak to one another for the rest of their lives. unknown

Bibliographically cryptic but clearly relatively recent i.e. post-WW2 facsimile reprint of this 16-page extract from the May 1866 issue of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" Vol. XXXII No. CXCII -- an article that follows up on U.S. Grant's postwar fame profiling the famed lead mining town in northwest Illinois that had become his home just prior to the Civil War. Front wrapper engraving depicts Galena's Main Street bulging with people assembled to hear the returning hero. A massive banner spans the street proclaiming "Hail to the Chief Who in Triumph Advances." Though an extract it is self-contained and sought after in its own right. Cincinnati Ohio 1879. Invitation Card. Fine. A private invitation to a dinner honoring General Ulysses S. Grant at the Grand Hotel of Cincinnati on December 11th 1879. Organizers of the event included Alphonso Taft Nicholas Longworth and Andrew Erkenbrecher. At the reception on December 11th 1879 Grant thanked the people of Cincinnati for their hospitality and was happy to be back in his "native State." An incredibly scarce piece of Cincinnati history and a relic of Ulysses Grant's World Tour. Upon returning from a two year post-presidential World Tour General Ulysses S. Grant was greeted as a returning hero to the United States. With stops at Yosemite Valley Galena Illinois and Chicago General Grant was greeted by thousands of well-wishers. Before this dinner in Cincinnati the Grant's visited Xenia Ohio to visit with Civil War orphans. unknown

Washington D.C. August 14 1868. 1868. Very good. - A 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide broadsheet General Order issued as a "resolution of Congress" authorizing Lieutenant General W.T. Sherman "to use the most efficient means his judgment will approve to reclaim from peonage the women and children of the Navajo Indians now held in slavery in the territory adjacent to their homes and the reservation on which the Navajo Indians have been confined." The resolution adapted by Congress on July 27 1868 was distributed as a general order by "Command of General Grant" and signed in print by E.D. Townsend as Assistant Adjutant General. Removed from a bound collection in the distant past the broadsheet is lightly chipped with stab marks along the left edge. Very good. <p>Throughout the American Southwest and in this case New Mexico Spanish settlers and their ancestors pursued a flourishing slave trade from the 16th though the 19th centuries. Captive Native Americans who became known as "Genizaros" were sold as slaves to Hispanic families. This practice went on even after the United States came to govern New Mexico. Having abolished slavery through the 13th Amendment in 1865 Congress then passed the "Peonage Act" in 1867 when it became known that New Mexicans still owned hundreds maybe thousands of these "Genizaros" consisting mostly of Navajo women and children.</p><p>RARE.</p> Washington, D.C., August 14, 1868.
