Eretta nel Cinquecento dalla corona portoghese, la piazzaforte marocchina di Mazagão, una zattera di pietra a cavallo fra la terraferma e l'oceano, resisterà eroicamente per più di due secoli alle incursioni e agli assedi dei mori, divenendo il simbolo della Reconquista e il fiore all'occhiello dell'amministrazione lusitana. La quale, però, avendo mire ben più ambiziose in Brasile, quella terra dell'oro che come un miraggio si estende di là dall'Atlantico, non esita a trasferire i suoi coraggiosi soldati della fede nel cuore dell'Amazzonia, dove, una volta fondata Nova Mazagão, dovranno dimenticare il loro glorioso passato e ricominciare da zero. E così, nel 1769, per i cittadini di Mazagão ha inizio un lungo periplo destinato a concludersi molti anni dopo: un viaggio che li vedrà sostare a Lisbona prima di fendere le acque dell'Atlantico e li lascerà abbandonati a se stessi a Belém, in attesa che le mura e le abitazioni della nuova città siano pronti a ospitarli. Ma è possibile spostare una città da un continente all'altro senza farle mutare natura? E dopo tutti quegli anni le persone che sono partite possono davvero dirsi le stesse al loro arrivo?
