September 25, 1970) was an American feminist author, journalist, member of the National Women's Party, and president of the Authors Guild Many of her works were published under her former name Inez Haynes Gillmore. She wrote over 40 books and was active in the suffragist movement in the early 1900s. Irwin was a "rebellious and daring woman",[2] but referred to herself as "the most timid of created beings". She died at the age of 97. ‎Édition originale de la relation de l’expédition géodésique de La Condamine au Pérou. Entrepris en 1735 avec les astronomes Godin et Bouguer, ce voyage avait été organisé par l’Académie des Sciences dans le but de faire des observations permettant de déterminer la figure de la terre en mesurant la longueur d'un arc de méridien d'un degré à proximité de l'équateur. Une expédition parallèle en Laponie, menée par Maupertuis, devait permettre, par comparaison des résultats, de déterminer si la forme des pôles était allongée suivant la théorie de Cassini ou aplatie suivant celle de Newton. Un supplément paru 2 ans plus tard. First edition of an account of an important scientific expedition which proved Newton's hypothesis on the sphericity of the Earth: presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the Earl of Chesterfield. In this paper, presented to the Academie des Sciences, La Condamine proposed a universal measurement of length which would be equivalent to the length of a pendulum beating once per second at the equator. La Condamine was among the scientists whom the Academie des Sciences sent to Peru in order to measure several degrees of meridian at the equator, and thus, in conjunction with a similar expedition to Lapland. ‎Édition EN PARTIE ORIGINALE, pour la lettre de M. Godin à La Condamine expliquant le voyage périlleux de son épouse de Quito à Cayenne. L'ouvrage (EO 1745) relate l'exploration de l'Amazone et une émeute dans les arènes de Cuenca en 1739. En 1735, La Condamine (1701-1774) fut envoyé au Pérou avec d'autres savants français et espagnols afin de mesurer la longueur d'un arc de méridien près de l'équateur tandis que d'autres savants étaient envoyés au pôle Nord pour des relevés analogues. Leurs calculs permirent de déterminer que les pôles étaient légèrement plats. En plus de l'aspect scientifique de l'ouvrage, l'auteur décrit les ethnies et les plantes (quinine, cacao, caoutchouc ou curare) rencontrées en descendant l'Amazone.Ch-1B Sabin 38485 ; Brunet III-729 ; Chadenat I-614.‎
