‎"Aucune entreprise ne mérite, certes, plus de louanges que celle-ci. Une histoire de l'art bourguignon, oeuvre de l'éminént spécialiste qu'est notre confrère M. Charles Oursel, ne pouvait que susciter l'intérêt de tous les amateurs d'art. En fait, l'ouvrage comble une lacune, car une pareille synthèse, embrassant l'activité bourguignonne depuis l'époque romaine jusqu'à nos jours, n'avait jamais été tentée. La réussite est complète : une présentation très soignée, une illustration de premier ordre, judicieusement groupée par grandes planches au milieu de chaque chapitre, font de ce livre un livre de luxe. Le texte de M. Oursel lui confère la valeur scientifique dont les belles publications tendent, hélas ! à manquer de plus en plus. (...) M. Oursel a choisi judicieusement le titre de l'ouvrage, l'expression « art de Bourgogne » lui permettant d'étudier toutes les œuvres aujourd'hui conservées sur le sol de la province, qu'elles représentent ou non l'art autochtone du terroir. Car la Bourgogne, carrefour de routes et de civilisations, a reçu de tous côtés, mais a mis sa marque sur tout ce qu'elle a emprunté. Ni Tournus, ni Cluny, ni Notre-Dame de Dijon ne sont inventions bourguignonnes, non plus que Sluter et Broederlam ne sont Bourguignons. Pourtant, ces noms sont ceux-là même dont la Bourgogne a tiré gloire, à juste titre. Les chapitres sur l'art roman comptent, naturellement, parmi les plus remarquables, puisque M. Oursel nous a déjà donné une synthèse sur ce sujet. (...) Tout ce que l'auteur écrit de Cluny est excellent. La chronologie de la grande église est exactement définie d'après les fouilles de M. K. J. Conant. (...) On lira aussi avec beaucoup d'intérêt le chapitre qui a trait à la peinture murale en Bourgogne. (...) Ce que l'auteur écrit de l'art gothique n'est pas moins excellent et son information apparaît sans défaut. L'architecture gothique bourguignonne nous est présentée sous son véritable visage (...) Les chapitres sur l'art en Bourgogne sous les ducs Valois sont eux aussi très documentés, d'après les travaux les plus récents (...) Enfin, on pourrait s'étendre sur les passages très importants du livre de M. Oursel concernant la Renaissance et la personne de Hugues Sambin, sur l'art classique à Dijon, dont on connaît trop peu les admirables hôtels. Ainsi se clôt le cycle magnifique de l'art bourguignon dont l'ouvrage de notre confrère montre que, tout au long des siècles, il n'a guère connu de périodes de déclin."
