That appears to be a rather early use of a telephone in a dramatic setting The telephone was patented only as recently as 1876. New York: Beadle and Company Publishers 118 William Street 1863. Octavo 16 x 10.5 cm. vii-x 11-99 pages. Stated "Revised and Enlarged Edition"; originally published 1859. The Dime Recipe Book serves as companion to the Dime Cook Book that was published just fourteen days earlier in July 1859; second in the series of Beadle's Housekeeper’s Hand Books. "The first edition has . 100 pages . A revised edition of the same size and with buff wrappers was issued by Irwin P. Beadle & Co. and was copyrighted December 19 1862. It has 72 sic pages." Johannsen A. House of Beadle and Adams and its dime and nickel novels. ~ Metta Victoria Fuller Victor 1831-1885 was author of more than one hundred dime novels including Alice Wilde 1860 the first dime novel; and the Dead Letter 1866 considered the first full-length work of crime fiction. The salmon-colored wrappers depict a young woman carefully pouring a liquid into a beaker. In front of her a scale and mortar and pestle sit on a table; and behind her a cabinet with small drawers indicating more of an apothecary’s shop than a kitchen. The recipes do indeed lean more toward medical and household recipes but a section for the kitchen is included as well. ~ Internally age-toned; rubbing to the corners. Publisher's faded salmon-colored wrappers lacking a 1 cm. chip from lower right corner; closed tears to wrapper at spine. A single thick stitch with a loop of cord was added by a homemaker seeking to hang the book on a nail or hook. Better than good. Very scarce. OCLC locates four copies of this enlarged edition and four copies of the 1859 first; Cagle 782 notes the 1859 first edition only; not in Lowenstein the Dime Cook Book of 1860 is included not in Bitting includes the Dime Cook Book 1864; Johannsen vol. 1 pages 373 & 375 no. 2. A substantial run of the famed Western Story Library featuring Ted Strong westerns which would eventually number 75 titles. Ted Strong was a character originally created by Street & Smith’s Young Rough Rider Weekly as an homage to Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign for a second Presidential term. Strong owned a Dakota ranch similar to Roosevelt’s and with his gang of eastern boys dressed in khaki uniforms such as those worn by the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War they cleaned up the territory for law and order. Published bi-monthly these stories re-issued Ted Strong westerns originally published in the Young Rough Rider Weekly and later collected in the New Medal Library. Later volumes contained new material and collected stories from the Wild West Weekly. See: J. Tips worn and curling as commonly seen bit thumbed and some small stains to wraps rar wrapper with a bit of loss to the fore tips; sound otherwise in much better condition than commonly seen. 'William Gannaway Brownlow 1805-1877 who was known as 'Parson Brownlow' because he had been a circuit-riding minister was an outspoken newspaper editor in Knoxville Tennessee at the outset of the Civil War. During Confederate occupation of the city Brownlow went north on a lecture tour accompanied by his daughter Susan. This novel which was sold on his northern tour contains an account of Brownlow's life as editor of the Knoxville Whig in Civil War East Tennessee including his imprisonment by Confederate troops in the winter of 1861.'
