‎"Empreint d'une veine romanesque, le témoignage d'Albert de Pouzols est celui d’un jeune pilote qui réussit à rejoindre Alger en septembre 1940. Avec plusieurs camarades déterminés comme lui à gagner l'Angleterre, il embarque sur un navire, le Saint-Pierre, qui est contraint d’accoster sur l'île de Formentera, aux Baléares. Arrêtés par des soldats espagnols, les hommes sont conduits dans une prison de fortune sur l'île d'Ibiza puis sont remis aux autorités françaises. Albert de Pouzols et ses compagnons sont successivement placés en résidence surveillée à Port-Vendres (Pyrénées-Orientales), puis internés dans les prisons de Toulon et de Marseille. C'est seul qu'il est conduit à Tunis puis Bizerte dans l'attente d'un jugement, au mois de juillet 1941 : un conseil de guerre le condamne à un an de prison. Il est placé en détention au sein de la prison de Tunis et affronte un quotidien d'une « monotonie sordide » (168) atténuée par la rencontre de plusieurs camarades dont Henry Blackwell, un marin britannique. Déplacé au camp de Téboursouk où sont emprisonnés une centaine de gaullistes, il connait des heures chargées « de violence et de haine » (201), encadré par des officiers pétainistes. C'est dans un état de santé des plus préoccupants que l’auteur est finalement transporté vers un hôpital où il recouvre ses forces, avant de rejoindre le « Borj Nord » (242), une citadelle marocaine à Fès. C'est là, qu'avant la fin de sa sentence, la liberté lui est rendue. De retour en France, il tente de passer en Suisse. Arrêté, il est conduit au camp de Saint-Paul-d'Eyjeaux (Haute-Vienne) d'où il ne sort qu’en avril 1943. Malade, il part en convalescence auprès des siens. Il rejoint ensuite la résistance parisienne et participe à la libération de la capitale, avant de s'engager dans l'armée régulière et de se retrouver sur le front de l'Atlantique. Ce récit s'achève par un vibrant hommage à tous ses compagnons, morts ou vivants, qui résistèrent au Troisième Reich." Early ownership that appears to be Beiler (a common Amish name). Pages 107/108 torn without loss. 12mo. 180 mm. Loose in the original full leather binding; worn. Baron Trenck, Imprisoned in 1745, at Glatz under the guard of Heinrich August de la Motte Fouque. The King ordered that Friedrich had to sit on his own gravestone. In 1746 Trenck escaped. Then, in 1749, he obtained an employment as Rittmeister of an imperial cuirassier regiment in Hungary. He traveled to Russia where he, or so he claimed, became gentleman of the bed chamber in the court of Tsarina Elizabeth of Russia. He fell in love with a married woman, whose name he never revealed. In 1753, he went to Danzig for the funeral of his mother, but was again captured on the orders of Frederick II and was sent to the Citadel Magdeburg. To prevent him from attempting to escape, they fastened his hands, feet, and body with heavy chains and manacles. In 1763, he was released through the intervention of Empress Maria Theresa. During the next ten years he led an active life - writing literature, running a wine trading business, and travelling to England and France. His autobiography (1787) was first translated into English by Thomas Holcroft, an officer of the Royal Artillery. It became popular reading in the late 18th century, and must have been thrilling for its early Amish owner. Evans 27814. EVANS1‎
