In Frage kommt dafür eigentlich nur Paul Buol [-von Strassberg und von Schauenstein] (1629 od. 1634-ev. 1697), von Parpan, der Sohn des Obersten in spanischen Diensten und geachteten Politikers und Staatsmannes im Zehngerichtenbund, Johann Anton Buol von Strassberg (1600-1662). Paul Buol war Landammann des Gerichtes Churwalden, Bundeslandammann [des Zehngerichtenbundes] 1673, Landeshauptmann des Veltlins 1681, dann Syndikatur-Präsident, Oberst in spanischen Diensten [usw.]. Er trat 1691(?) zur katholischen Kirche über, 1692 (1670?) erwarb er die Hälfte des Schlosses Rietberg im Domleschg, woher die Familie das weitere Prädikat 'von Rietberg' führte. (HBLS, 2, p. 434, Nr. 8; als Todesjahr wird 1677 angegeben, was aber offensichtlich falsch ist). Vgl. auch E. Poeschel, Kunstdenkmäler des Kantons Graubünden, 3, 1940, bes. p. 118 (Rietberg), und P. Gillardon, Geschichte des Zehngerichtenbundes, 1936, p. 193 u. 211. "Nach seinem Konfessionswechsel Entzug des Landrechts im Zehngerichtenbund. [..] Um 1675 Hausbau in Chur (seit 1872 Rätisches Museum)" (J. Simonett, in: HLS). - "Im letzten Jahrzehnt des ausgehenden 17. Jahrhunderts ist auch ein neues Zunehmen der konfessionellen Gegensätze festzustellen. So erregte im Jahre 1690 in Chur und im Zehngerichtenbund der Uebertritt des Obersten Paul Buol von Parpan zum katholischen Glauben allgemeines Aufsehen. In Chur kam es deswegen zu einem eigentlichen Auflauf." (Gillardon, op. cit. p. 211). Angesichts der ähnlichen konfessionellen Umstände bei Autor und Vorbesitzer des vorliegenden Werkes dürften diese detaillierten Erläuterungen angebracht sein. - Sinnspruch wohl von gleicher Hand "Symb. quicquid agis prudenter agas et respice finem" : i.e. Was immer du tust, handle mit Bedacht und bedenke das Ende.
