‎Das Werk von Philipp Reinhard Vitriarius (Oppenheim i.d. Pfalz 1647-1720 Leiden) wurde von ca. 1692 bis 1750 in verschiedenen Varianten mehrfach aufgelegt. Trotzdem erscheint der Titel und damit auch diese von Vitriarius' Sohn Johann Jacob besorgte erweiterte Ausgabe mit dem Beitrag von Buddeus im Handel nur sehr selten. -- "Vitriarius (Philipp Reinhard) ein berühmter Professor Juris zu Leiden starb 1717 [recte: 1720]. Man hat verschiedene Werke von ihm [..]. Der Sohn, Joh. Jacob [HBLS: Jean Jacques] Vitriarius, gebohren zu Genf den 8. Jun. 1679, lehrte die Rechte anfangs zu Heidelberg und Utrecht, hernach auch zu Leiden, wo er den 12. Dec. 1745 verstorben ist. Er hat eine vermehrte Auflage von seines Vaters 'Institutionibus Juris naturae & gentium' herausgegeben." (Ladvocat, dt. Ausgabe Ulm 1763). Offenbar wurde Vitriarius sen. 1678 "unentgeltlich ins Bürgerrecht von Genf aufgenommen" (HBLS), wo er an der Akademie von 1675-1682 als Professor der Rechte tätig war; danach unterrichtete er bis zu seinem Tod in Leiden. - Das Thema des 'Naturrechts' bearbeitete Vitriarius, indem er das Konzept von Hugo Grotius' Hauptwerk als Ansatz verwendete: "Secutus sum magni Hugoni Grotii divinum opus de Jure Belli & Pacis, libros, capita, paragraphos; [..] ubi ab ipso dissentio, in margine notatur. Theologiam Theologis relinquo". (Praefatio ad Lectorem, Bl. 1 v. f.). Vitriarius geht hier auch auf die Mitarbeit seines Sohnes ein, und er bedankt sich beim Tübinger Theologen Johann Wolfgang Jäger [Joh. Wolfgangus Jägerus, 1647-1720; s. Ladvocat loc. cit.] "in Observationibus suis ad Hugonis Grotium de Jure Belli & Pacis ex Collegio quodam MS. mihi opiniones aliquas affinxerit, & [..] in Literis humanissimis ad me datis 21. Febr. 1711 agnoscit, [..]." -- Der Theologe Johann Franz Buddeus od. Budde (Anklam 1667-1729 Gotha), ein Nachkomme des französischen Humanisten Guillaume Budé (lat. Budaeus, 1467-1540), war zuerst Professor der Moral in Halle, dann Prof. der Theologie in Jena. In seinen Schriften nahm er eine vermittelnde Stellung zwischen den Orthodoxen und den Pietisten ein; er geriet darob in Streit namentlich mit Christian Wolff [Wolf]. Vgl. Brockh. 3, 1894 (Titel erwähnt) u. Ueberweg 3, 1924, p. 459 u. 456; "Wolff tractirte ihn dafür unbarmherzig als einen einfältigen Schalk und Narrenphilosophen." (Frank, in: ADB 3, 1876). Dies ev. zu Unrecht: "Sein ausserordentlich ausgebreitetes, den Lehrbetrieb seiner Zeit stark beeinflussendes Schrifttum ist von bleibender Fortwirkung, insbesondere durch seine historische Sicht und die wissenschaftliche Fundierung der Theologie; er steht persönlich wie sachlich zwischen Pietismus und Orthodoxie, über diese hinaus in die Aufklärung weisend." (G. Aland, in: NDB 2, 1955). -- Hs. Besitzervermerk 'H. v. Podewils,Lugduni Batavorium 1716': wohl Heinrich Graf von Podewils (Krangen i. Pommern 1696 [ADB: 1695]-1760 Magdeburg), preussischer Minister und Diplomat. "Nach seiner Kavalierstour trat er in den preussischen Staatsdienst ein und wurde 1720 Geheimer Kriegsrat im Generalkommissariat. Friedrich Wilhelm I. berief ihn 1723 als Geheimen Finanzrat in das neue General-Ober-Finanz-Kriegs- und Domänendirektorium." (etc., H. W. v. Hentig, in: NDB). - Besitzerstempel mit ligiertem und gespiegeltem Monogramm (wohl FG oder GF) überhöht von Adelskrone. Sinnspruch a. hint. Vorsatz: 'Ubi praecedit Injuria ibi Bellum est justum'.‎
