Smyth, C. (Charles) Piazzi.
New Measures of the Great Pyramid, by a New Measurer. Described and Tested. Extended and Corrected from the Review in the "Banner of Israel", for November and December, 1883.
Small octavo. Pp. xii, 13-127. Dedication leaf, Preface. With text figures. Appendices. Original errata slip tipped-in onto the appropriate place. Original publisher's printed stiff wrappers, spine worn. Good copy, neat interior. ~ First edition. Most uncommon in this issue of original publisher's printed wrappers and including the practically always missing errata-slip. With inscription and contemporary bookplate of Norfolk & Norwich Library on upper wrap. Beinlich-Seeber 18874, quoting the book unseen. Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900) was astronomer-royal for Scotland, professor of practical astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh. He was heavily influenced by pyramid theorist John Taylor who theorized that the Great Pyramid was planned and the building supervised by the biblical Noah. Refused a grant by the Royal Society, Smyth went on an expedition to Egypt in order to accurately measure every surface, dimension, and aspect of the Great Pyramid. He subsequently published his book "Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid" (1864). He claimed that the measurements he obtained from the Great Pyramid of Giza indicated a unit of length, the pyramid inch, a God-given measure handed down through the centuries from the time of Israel. His conclusion was that the architects of the pyramid could only have been directed by the hand of God.

Southern, Pat
CLEOPATRA
DJ in mylar; Cleopatra was intimately involved in the critical years that saw the Roman Republic transformed into the Roman Empire. How this transition appeared to the Queen of Egypt - and the part she played in it - is the subject of Pat Southern's engrossing new biography. Descended from the first Ptolemy, one of the companions of Alexander the Great, Cleopatra was the last in a long line of Macedonian rulers of Egypt. It was Julius Caesar's involvement in an Alexandrian civil war that led to her being set up as Queen of Egypt. She also had an affair with Caesar, by whom she produced a son Ptolemy Caesar, better known as Caesarion. A good linguist, intelligent and shrewd, she soon proved herself an able administrator - and ruthless when necessary. For two years she was a guest of Caesar's in Rome, but on his assassination she returned to Alexandria - where in turn Mark Antony was to become her geust and lover. Over the years of their acquaintance they produced three children. However, Roman sensibilities were greatly disturbed by the Donations of Alexandria whereby Antony distributed vast areas of the east to Cleopatra and their children, and their behavior allowed Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) to brand the Egyptian Queen as the arch enemy, worse than Hannibal, nearer than the Parthians and powerful because she had access to Antony's legions. ; 160 pages

Sowada, Karin N [Egyptology]
Egypt in the Eastern Mediterranean During the Old Kingdom: An Archaeological Perspective Orbis Biblicus Et Orientalis 237
Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 2009. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. 400pp. Sewn binding in simulated cloth with gilt stamped lettering sans DJ as issued. Ex-library with external labels removed; exceedingly clean and sharp with sound binding and no evidence of use. 'This study presents a revised view of Egyptian foreign relations in the eastern Mediterranean during the Old Kingdom 3rd-6th Dynasties based on an extensive analysis of old and new archaeological data and its relationship to the well-known textual sources. The material demonstrates that while Egypt's most important relationships were with Byblos and the Lebanese coast generally it was an active participant in the geo-political and economic affairs of the Levant throughout much of the third millennium BCE. The archaeological data shows that the foundation of these relationships was established at the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period and essentially continued until the end of the 6th Dynasty with ebbs flows and changes of geographical and political emphasis. It is argued that despite the paucity of textual data the 4th Dynasty represents the apogee of Egypt's engagement in the region a time when the centralised state was at the height of its power and control of human and economic capital. More broadly this study shows that Egyptian interaction in the eastern Mediterranean fits the pattern of state-to-state contact between ruling elites which was underpinned by official expeditions engaged in gift and commodity exchange diplomatic endeavours and military incursions.' Byblos et la fête des Adonies.
Royal octavo. Pp. 92. Plus a suite of 15 plates bound at end. With 12 figures and maps to the text. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's green full cloth, gilt lettering to cover and spine. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. [NOTE:] It should be noted that Brill publishers currently offer this book as a digitalized - laser-printed - reproduction, a so-called print-on-request, while not identifying this as such, but presenting it as a "new" copy from the original edition, which now is over 50 years old. We have examined and compared both editions, and the difference in quality is obvious to the bare eye. Might be of importance for the purists to be aware of this.
