London 1778. folio 22 2pp. the final leaf blank on recto and with docket title on verso stitched as issued folded and final leaf worn and dustsoiled uncut. A very good copy. First edition: the original printing i.e. not an extract from a volume of collected reprints. A good example of a classic 18th century Enclosure Act part of a long process of privatisation which accelerated in the middle years of the 18th century and largely shaped the form of the English lowland countryside we see today. The Act is a long document which among other things provides an intimate portrait of all local people who had historic claims on or rights over the land including tythes trees minerals grazing rights of common and so forth. The historian G.M. Trevelyan characterised these Enclosure Acts as 'the radicalism of the rich often at the expense of the poor' Illustrated English Social History> vol.III p.80. Loosely inserted in this document is an early 18th century manuscript note ink on paper clearly relevant to the land in question. The note is headed 'An account of ye names & quantity of acres of the pasture & arable grounds belonging to the estate that Daniel Lawrence now rents in the Parrish of Brislington alias Buslington which I bought of my kinsman Michaell Wharton and took to it at Lady day 1716'. There follows a list of orchards pastures and fields with locations and acreages together with the rent payable. The ms. is one leaf 220 x 220mm folded boldly written in ink and easily legible.
