Pocket atlas published by Fran�ois Halma the maps reduced from Sanson's 1658 folio atlas with Luyt's Tables Geographiques & Bion's l'Usage des Globes featuring striking folding plates diagramming the workings of the celestial systems. Without the world map the map of southern Germany and the map of Madagascar. Born in Abbeville a town in the Picardy region of France in 1600 Sanson was the most noted French cartographer in modern history. Mapmaker to Louis XIV King of France Sanson endowed his maps with the most recent geographical information as well as the finest and sharpest engraving of the period. His "Cartes Generales de Toutes les Parties du Monde" was the most important single product of French commercial cartography of the seventeenth century. Sanson sparked a renaissance in geographical endeavor in his native country which had not been a major player on the international cartographic stage since the great Oronce Fin� in the sixteenth century. With this atlas Sanson laid the foundations of French domination in map production initiating the so-called "French school of cartography" a school that was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail and discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as irrelevant. From Sanson's time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century French geographical conceptions were more influential than those put forward by any other nation. With this landmark atlas Sanson all but single-handedly caused the center of cartographic innovation to shift from Holland to France. Although this atlas is always listed under Nicolas Sanson it is essentially Francois Halma's plagiarized pocket version of the Sanson atlas reduced from Sanson's 1658 folio atlas with the map divided into Continent groups. "Fran�ois Halma was an editor printer and publisher of theological historical and geographical works. His output was large. He first established his business in Utrecht in 1674 then moved to Amsterdam and finally settled in Leeuwarden where he died in 1722. This influential map shows the Spanish and French possessions in the southern part of the United States. The map extends from the southernmost part of Virginia to the coast of what is now Texas. When first introduced by Sanson in 1657 this map was the first to use the name L. Erie in an atlas and to introduce several new rivers in Virginia. The French claims in the Carolinas are reasserted with the region named Floride Francoise despite the region not having had any French presence for nearly 100 years. The place name Caroline is not related to the future English colony of Carolina. Instead it is a confusion between the French Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River and Charlefort that was located near Port Royal. According to Burden this is the third state of the map. Contemporary mottled calf small repair on corners; an excellent copy with only an occasional toning on a few text leaves. Although deemed a second edition this is actually a reissue of the first with a different title page. The maps of the American continent include: North America New Canada or New France Florida Mexico Guadalajara New Mexico California Audience of Guatimala the Isles Antilles & Les Lucayes et Les Caribes South America Terre Ferme Roy de Grenade Guiane Guiane et Caribane Peru and the course of the Amazon Chile Brazil whose coast is possessed by the Portuguese Paraguay Detroit de Magellan Terre et Isles Magellanicques. Each map indicates that Sanson created it but bears the address of Pierre Mariete. The explanatory commentary contains information describing the country customs and more. Just prior to publication of this series of works which also included atlases of Europe and Africa Sanson formed a partnership with Pierre Mariette an engraver and printseller. Pursuant to their contract Sanson drew the maps and Mariette engraved and printed them. Each maintained possession of half of the plates and they were allowed to exchange and/or buy from one another. Some bore the address of Sanson others Mariette. But Sanson allowed Mariette to store his plates and Mariette without prior agreement started placing his address on Sanson's plates. In time a lawsuit which had been prosecuted was settled when both died and their respective sons took over the business. This atlas is a fine examples of French mapping by the foremost French cartographer of the seventeenth century. Contemporary mottled calf corner edges neatly repaired interior has some minor dampstaining mainly on text and on blank verso of maps last blank leaf torn on lower fore-edge. A contemporary signature on first blank leaf. Similar to L'Amerique this atlas of the continent of Asia was first printed in 1652 and reprinted here with a new title page. The maps are all dated 1652 with only one dated 1653 and do not include the address of Mariette. The atlas features maps of India Persia China Japan the Maldives Arabia and the Philippines among others. A fine and attractive map from a later issue of Jaillot's 'Atlas Nouveau'. The Frenchman Alexis-Hubert Jaillot 1632-1712 was the most important atlas compiler and publisher of the last quarter of the seventeenth century. The great fire of 1672 which destroyed the Blaeu empire was his opportunity to take over this part of the market. He and Nicolas Sanson 1600-1667 the founder of the French School of Geography had a working relationship which ended by the end of the 1670s this led to Jaillot developing his own series of atlases. Due to his tremendous importance and efforts Jaillot was given the title of Geographe du Roy by Louis XIV The 'Atlas Nouveau' was the result of the intense collaboration between Jaillot and the Sanson family. Halma acquired many of the plates for Algemeene Weereld-Beschryving from Joannes Ribbius who had enlisted the services of engraver Antoine de Winter to make copies of the maps in Nicolas Sanson's quarto atlases of the four continents. De Winter made very few geographical changes and maintained the attribution to Sanson on the newly engraved plates. Halma supplemented the Sanson maps with about a dozen new maps engraved in the same style as Sanson's without any attribution on the maps as well as 23 panoramic views of famous cities around the world. The third state of this highly important map of North America by the founder of the French School of cartography.<br/> <br/>This very rare map is the most geographically progressive portrayal of the continent made during its generation and was not superseded until Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's map of 1688. Importantly it is the first map to depict the Great Lakes in a recognizable form and the first to name Lake Ontario and Lake Superior. In his rendering of the region Sanson benefited from having received a copy of The Jesuit Relations published in Paris in 1649 a detailed account by French missionaries who had traveled in the region. Most notably this included Father Paul Ragueneau's account of his visit to Niagara Falls and Jean Nicollet's discovery of Lake Michigan "Lac des Puans" in 1634. Down the St. Lawrence River from the lakes Montréal is named the settlement having been founded by the Sieur de Maisonneuve in 1642. Elsewhere to the north a mysterious strait weaves over "New South Wales" on Hudson's Bay terminating in the interior of the continent a blank space labeled as "Mer Glaciale". This alludes to the existence of a much hoped-for Northwest Passage. On the eastern seaboard the map notes "Nouvelle Amsterdam" in the place of present day New York and is the first printed map to label "Nouvelle Suede" referring to the Swedish colony centered on Fort Christina founded on the site of present-day Wilmington Delaware in 1638. To the far southwest Sanson based his depiction on the Father Alonso Benavides Memorial a travel account of New Mexico published in Madrid in 1630. It is the first printed map to label "Santa Fe" which is incorrectly shown to be on the banks of the Rio Grande and the domains of various native tribes such as the "Apache" "Navajo" and the "Taosij" Taos. To the west California is shown as a large island and features some of the same nomenclature as found on Johannes de Laet's map of 1630. To the north an entirely unknown realm is named "Conibas" a mythical land that lay between North America and Asia. A striking aspect of the map is the sinusoidal projection employed by Sanson that essentially places the globe on an elliptical graticule creating a very pleasing aesthetic. The composition is finished by an extremely elegant Baroque title cartouche featuring swags of fruit and vegetation. Nicholas Sanson was born in the town of Abbeville in Picardy. Something of a child prodigy by the age of eighteen he could already be found in Paris drafting his own maps. There he quickly rose to become Royal Geographer to Louis XIII in 1630. He maintained the position upon the ascension of the "Sun King" Louis XIV in 1643 and later served as tutor to the ambitious young monarch. In 1644 he formed a lucrative partnership with Paris publisher Pierre Mariette with the objective of producing a great atlas that could rival those of the Amsterdam houses such as Blaeu and Jansson. The present map was devised as one of the most important maps in the atlas. The first state of the map was printed in 1650 a second state appeared a year later and the third state in 1659. The atlas itself entitled Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde was not finally assembled until 1658. It was however a landmark moment in the history of French cartography being the first folio atlas produced in that country. The extremely high quality of Sanson's work motivated other French mapmakers to improve the standard of their production. Sanson also greatly influenced Louis XIV's chief minister Jean-Baptisite Colbert to heavily fund cartographic projects. This gave rise to a great 'French School' of cartography that was to eventually wrest dominance of the mapmaking market from the Dutch by the 1680s. After Sanson's death in 1667 his work was continued by his sons Guillaume d.1703 and Adrian d.1708. La Catalogne est divisée en vigueries ou juridictions administratives, qui disparurent pour la plupart sous Louis XV. La ville de Barcelone est représentée par le dessin d'une citadelle. Un second titre figure au-dessus de la carte. Très bon exemplaire, contours aquarellés à l'époque. Elle est ornée d'un magnifique cartouche de titre décoré des armoiries du Grand Dauphin, fils de Louis XIV, de deux Amérindiens et de têtes de perroquets. Le cartouche contenant l'échelle est décoré d'un Amérindien, de deux personnages féminins, et d'oiseaux. Tandis que les côtes sont très détaillées, de vastes régions à l'intérieur des terres, non encore suffisamment explorées, ont été laissées vides, en particulier le Brésil et l'Argentine, appelée Terre Magellanique. Le nord, où se trouvent la Colombie et le Venezuela, est appelé Terre Ferme. Au nord, dans la région située entre les fleuves Orénoque et Amazone, figure le lac mythique de Parime et la ville de Manoa. Jusqu'au XIXe siècle, les cartographes reporteront dans cet espace inexploré cet immense lac sur les rives duquel s'élève Manoa, fabuleuse cité aux parois d'or, aussi appelée El Dorado. L'auteur a représenté les itinéraires entre les grands centres de l'époque : Paris, Lyon, Rouen, Toulouse, Bordeaux ou Limoges. A droite de la carte, dans un encadré intitulé Au Lecteur, Tavernier explique que Nicolas Sanson a exécuté la carte à sa demande. Elle connut un si grand succès qu'elle fut très vite copiée par un autre géographe, Nicolas Berey. Puis elle fut remise à jour et rééditée par les fils de Sanson en 1676. Cette carte détaillée montre les limites des 14 capitaineries portugaises, toutes situées le long des côtes. Comme l'auteur le précise dans le titre, les côtes du pays appartiennent aux Portugais, tandis que l'intérieur des terres est habité par un très grand nombre de peuples encore inconnus. Tout le long des capitaineries sont nommées une cinquantaine de tribus indigènes. L'Atlantique est nommé "Mer de Nort et du Brésil", et le tropique du Capricorne a été nommé par erreur tropique du Cancer. La carte est décorée d'un beau cartouche de titre. Reconnu comme le fondateur de la cartographie française, Nicolas Sanson, le premier de cette célèbre famille de cartographes, quitta sa ville natale d'Abbeville pour Paris, où il rencontra Richelieu en 1627.
