On trouve aussi un ensemble de procès-verbaux, d'arrêts et de rapports concernant le régime de santé, les instructions morales et religieuses, la police judiciaire et administrative des prisons. On peut citer comme rapporteurs: le duc de La Rochefoucauld, Pariset, Bigot de Préameneu, le comte de La Borde, Try, Jacquinot de Pampelune, et le marquis de Barbé-Marbois. Oeuvrant sur un plan national, la Société royale a notamment généralisé les commissions de surveillance dans les maisons d'arrêt. A handsome engraving based an earlier portrait of Neild by Samuel De Wilde. Beneath the portrait is an allegorical scene related to Neild's work as a penal reformer. The full title is as follows: "James Neild Esqr. High Sheriff of the County of Bucks. 1804 At 60. One of his Majesty's acting Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Buckingham Kent and Middlesex and the City of Liberty of Westminster. Treasurer of the Society for the Relief of persons imprisoned for small debts." James Neild 4 June 1744 – 16 February 1814 was an English jeweller and prison reformer. While he was supported by two particular friends Weeden Butler and John Coakley Lettsom his efforts were distinct from those of John Howard and the Quaker group including Elizabeth Fry. Dampstaining to front cover and lower edges throughout. Very good minus. 48pp. <br/><br/>An early issue of the prisoner-produced newsmagazine of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Respected among his fellow inmates Wilbert Rideau was able to secure freedom from oversight by prison administration making THE ANGOLITE the only uncensored prisoner published newsmagazine in the country at the time. Under Rideau's editorship the magazine won numerous journalism awards and was the first prison publication to be nominated for the National Magazine Award for which it was nominated 7 times. The publication highlighted issues within Angola including those of race homosexuality prison life and news prisoner programs and accomplishments as well as legal and legislative issues in the State that would affect the prison. This issue includes an article on the budget and censorship issues for movies shown at the prison; an illustrated profile of the prisoner-workers who maintain the Louisiana State Police Barracks in Baton Rouge; "Longtermers: A Study" a comprehensive study of longterm prisoners; and a brief entry on the prison's banning of the magazine HUSTLER Back issues rare in the trade. And while OCLC notes dozens of holdings the majority are of modern issues from the 1990's-on. Outside of Louisiana where at least 10 institutions note copies only the NYPL appears to hold any substantial group from the early Rideau-era including this issue. Scarce.
