It garnered worldwide publicity and lasted nine contentious months against a backdrop of acrimonious exchanges between Judge Medina and the defense attorneys. Medina charged the defense with delaying tactics trifling unnecessary jury challenges and contempt; the defense attorneys claimed judicial bias racism in the jury selection and infringements upon the freedom of the press. Le présent exemplaire constitue l’édition définitive d’un de ses ouvrages les plus connus consacré à l’art oratoire et, spécialement à l’art oratoire parlementaire. Il débute par un traité de l’éloquence parlementaire, puis dans les autres genres (éloquence de la presse, didactique du pamphlet, éloquence du Barreau et du Parquet) parmi lesquels il faut particulièrement relever un chapitre que l’on ne retrouve dans aucun autre traité d’art oratoire : de l’Éloquence Délibérative du Conseil d’État du Premier Empire (dont l’auteur a fait partie). La suite de l’ouvrage est constituée d’une série de portraits des parlementaires les plus en vogue pendant la première partie du XIXème siècle (Benjamin Constant, Royer-Collard, Villêle, Ledru-Rollin, Lafayette, Odilon-Barrot, Arago, Lamartine, Thiers etc.). On y trouve en outre un certain nombre de petits pamphlets qui n’avaient pas été réédités jusqu’alors parmi lesquels on notera tout particulièrement “Statut du Nouvel Ordre Égalitaire” qui est une parodie de la doctrine fourriériste.

Proceedings of a General Court Martial, held in the Orderly Room at the Barracks in Colchester, on seven Officers, of the West Kent Regiment of Militia, by order of Lieutenant-General Lord Charles Fitzroy, commanding the Eastern District, on a Charge exhibited against them by Lieutenant-Colonel Dalton, of the same regiment; with their Defence, and Prefatory Observations. Solicitors for the Prisoners, Mr. Sutton, of Colchester.
First edition, lacks half-title, xv, [1], 139, [1] pp., recent quarter morocco, marbled boards, spine gilt. The trial of Lieutenants Birch, Bishop, Aitkins, Ramsden, Nicholl, Richardson, and Bath, of the West Kent Regiment of Militia, on a charge preferred against them by Lieutenant-Colonel Dalton of the same regiment. For conducting themselves in a manner prejudicial to good order and military discipline.....[that they].... "systematically and contumaciously absented themselves from the Society of the Field Officers and Captains." They refused to speak to the higher ranks or to mess with them. They were all found guilty and dismissed from His Majesty's Service, although the Court Martial expressed some sympathy towards the younger officers. Not listed by Copac; OCLC finds copies at Harvard, Huntington, Yale and 1 single copy in Australia.

First Edition, with the circular stamp of the "Birmingham Law Society" on title, [2], 73, [1] pp., disbound. The charge preferred against Major Thomas Moncrieff of the Berwickshire Regiment of Militia, was "for not resisting immediately, and endeavouring, as far as in his power, to prevent, the outrage committed in the mess-room on the 30th January 1807; whereby a gross insult was offered, not only to the Major, but every officer present, contrary to his duty as an officer then commanding the regiment, and contrary to good order and military discipline." A Complete Report of the Trial of Miss Madeline Smith for the Alleged Poisoning of Pierre Emile L'Angelier
Edinburgh: William P. Nimmo 1857. A little dusted but a good copy. Octavo portrait; green cloth original wrappers bound in. Second edition. Madeline Smith 1835-1928 was tried for murder by arsenic-poisoning and acquitted by the Edinburgh courts. After the highly-publicised trial she married a Dr. Tudor Hora and was urged by her family to leave for the colonies. She and her husband settled in West Australia and lived incognito. When her identity was discovered Smith and her husband fled Perth and settled in Hotham near Melbourne. Later she left her husband and lived in complete seclusion. She died in Melbourne in 1893.
