Dickens's model for Mr. Jaggers in Great Expectations Harmer was a lawyer who practiced in the criminal courts. His daily experience led him to expose miscarriages of justice in order to promote reforms in criminal procedure. One such instance was the trial of Holloway and Haggerty who were convicted through flimsy evidence and the testimony of a witness with questionable motives. It was a controversial trial so the execution attracted an unusually large crowd of about 40000 people. About 40 people were trampled to death as the crowd attempted to push closer to the scaffold. "In 1879 the body of Mary Stannard twenty-two once the servant of Reverend Herbert H. Hayden was found in one of Hayden's fields in Madison Conn. Her throat was cut her skull was fractured and there was arsenic in her stomach. Stannard had spoken to several people about her recent pregnancy by Hayden and explained that he was going to give her something to induce an abortion. She said also that she was planning to meet Hayden in the field to pick berries and discuss their future. Unable to account for himself during the time of the killing Hayden was arrested after it was discovered that he had purchased an ounce of arsenic "to kill rats" the day of his former servant's death. At the three-month trial a clairvoyant testified to the defendant's innocence the first such incident in an American courtroom. A hung jury resulted in Hayden's release" Nash. The plot was exposed by a Times of London correspondent in a letter published in the newspaper on 26th May 1840 which referred to "the great forgery company established on the continent lately detected" and naming the co-conspirators. These included the Marquis of Bourbel "the chief of the gang" the Baron Louis d'Arjuzon alias De Castel Pipe "an Englishman who professes to be a solicitor in London" and Cunningham Graham "an anonymous partner in the house of Bogle Kerrich and Co." The case was sensational in both social and in banking circles. It exposed the largely unregulated and certainly sloppy banking practices associated with letters of credit easy to forge and difficult to police and the almost brilliant ingenuity of an international gang of con men. The naming of Allan George Bogle-who was almost certainly involved-triggered this libel action against John Joseph Lawson the printer and publisher of the Times and resulted in the award of one farthing damages for Bogle but enormous expense and the co. unknown‎

With a hired assistant Tom Graham he enticed Armstrong to Camden New Jersey and there bashed his head in with an axe which he had carefully marked with the initials of another man to throw suspicion on him. Though he remained unconscious Armstrong survived and Hunter calling at his home hastened his death by tearing the bandages from his head. "Corruption or mismanagement by employees or partners of non-British houses frequently made news during the century. One of the more celebrated cases was the failure of Sebastian Lezica Brothers in September 1835. The manager of the house a German named Frederick Hornung apparently forged bills of exchange without the knowledge of his employers three Argentine brothers. After the failure of a British house Thwaites and Company and after the retention of money in the Chilean branch the Lezica Brothers had to raise money. Originally Hartung procured the signatures of a number of people including Thwaites; but when persons declined he began to forge names on bills of exchange--both the drawer's and drawee's names--in order to prevent bankruptcy. He thought this would need to be done for only a short time but he became involved until the total sum owed the market was over one and a half million pesos." Reber. Only edition. Full account of the several trials connected with this famous Massachusetts case by one of the accused. Daniel Webster served as one of the defense attorneys shortly after his return to private practice following his two terms in Congress. The respected and well-connected Major Goodridge's accusation of robbery against the witless low-life Kenniston brothers was supported by popular sentiment until Webster began his defence which meticulously unraveled the Major's story and succeeded in gaining the Kenniston's acquittal. The trial was an early landmark in Webster's legal career and his final address to the jury first printed here is considered a classic of Webster's oratory. It was later anthologized. Daniel Fletcher Webster 1818-1862 known as Fletcher Webster was Daniel Webster's eldest son. Chief Clerk of the U.S. State Department when his father was Secretary of State he commanded the 12th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. He was killed at the Second Battle of Bull Run. "Isaac Smith Kalloch accused of adultery in this prosecution was a Baptist clergyman and was supported by the trustees of his church throughout this affair. . The jury could not reach a verdict in the case which was tried in the Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas Criminal Session in Cambridge Massachusetts" Cohen. Kalloch was defended by the eminent lawyer and politician Richard Henry Dana Jr. 1815-1882. The trial resulted in a hung jury. Kalloch later moved to San Francisco and became that city's mayor in 1879. The Full Report includes the judge's charge but not the jury's final verdict. Kalloch was acquitted. He moved to San Francisco where he continued to generate controversy by skirting the bounds of decency. When he decided to run for mayor of San Francisco in 1879 he came under attack from the San Francisco Chronicle's editor-in-chief Charles de Young who was backing another candidate. DeYoung hoping to end Kalloch's campaign accused the minister of having an affair. Kalloch responded by claiming that De Young's mother ran a brothel. In response DeYoung ambushed Kalloch on a street and shot him twice. Kalloch survived the wounds. Due in part to the sympathy of voters he was elected the 18th Mayor of San Francisco. The murder of Joseph White a wealthy retired sea captain a conspiracy by a relative Joseph Knapp who hired his brother John Francis Knapp and the brothers Richard and George Crowninshield was one of the most famous trials of the 1830s. Joseph Knapp received immunity for turning in the Crowninshields. George Crowninshield had a good alibi that prevented his conviction. Richard Crowninshield escaped justice by hanging himself. Knox's Supreme Court argument in the landmark Northern Securities Case and the federal government's appeal of the case from the Circuit Court to the Supreme Court was likely bound by Knox as a gift to a colleague or friend. Decided in 1904 the Northern Securities Case was a pivotal case in the legal history of the Progressive Era and the history of railroads in the American West. The Northern Securities Company was a powerful trust formed by J.P. Morgan and James G. Hill to control railroad trunk lines in the Northwest and into Chicago and stifle competition. President Roosevelt seeing an opportunity to exert federal power against a business monopoly instructed Knox to bring suit against the Northern Securities Company. Knox handled the case personally writing the appeal from the decision of the Minnesota Circuit Court and arguing the government's case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Invoking the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 Knox argued that The Northern Securities Company acted in restraint of trade. The court's decision on a 5-4 vote with Oliver Wendell Holmes and Chief Justice Melville Fuller dissenting upheld the government's argument affirming the constitutionality of the Sherman Antitrust Act. unknown‎

The Popgun Plot was an alleged 1794 conspiracy by three members of the London Corresponding Society a British Radical organization to assassinate King George III with a poison dart fired from a pop-gun airgun. Lemaitre was one of four men indicted as conspirators and charged with treason. All four were acquitted in May 1796 because the chief witness against them died. Our pamphlet is the primary account of this case. A second edition was published in 1795. Both editions are rare. Only edition. Marshall and Ross we are never given their first names were a tenant and hired hand of a Mr. Niles a farmer. They were convicted of arson after Niles's barns were destroyed by fire. This verdict seemed unfair and the defense attorney petitioned successfully for an appeal. Published in the weeks leading up to the second trial this pamphlet offers an argument for their conviction. An interesting case it is also a fine record of the social setting of criminal law in small-town New England in the mid-nineteenth century. Parker 1st Earl of Macclesfield was a lawyer and English Whig politician. Made a Privy Counsellor in 1710 he was Lord Chief Justice from 1710 to 1718 and Lord Chancellor from 1718 to 1725. In 1725 the Earl was impeached for taking bribes and tried in the House of Lords. He convicted by a unanimous vote for taking more than 100000 in bribes about 11000000 today. He was removed from the Privy Council required to forfeit 100000 fined an additional 30000 and placed in the Tower of London until these sums were paid.
