Vaut-elle absolution des atteintes portées, par le vandalisme, à la ville et à ses monuments ? Si Lyon présente le caractère d'une continuité historique exceptionnelle, sur plus de vingt siècles, il n'en a pas moins souffert, de la ruine de la ville gallo-romaine aux entreprises de l'urbanisme destructeur des 19e et 20e siècles, des atteintes du vandalisme. L'occupation protestante en 1562 et les effets de la nationalisation des biens du clergé durant la période révolutionnaire ont fait disparaître de nombreux édifices religieux, les politiques dévastatrices menées tout au long des 19e et 20e siècles, sous le prétexte du renouvellement urbain, ont touché la ville dans sa forme et sa matière, parfois dans son identité même, comme en témoigne la disparition récente de son patrimoine industriel. Cet ouvrage, nourri d'une recherche historique approfondie et largement illustré, est la première tentative de synthèse des effets du vandalisme à Lyon et de la constitution progressive d'une conscience patrimoniale locale. Il ne se veut ni accusateur, ni nostalgique, mais a le souci de rappeler les responsabilités des uns dans la perte et les combats des autres pour la mémoire. En des temps troublés, il vise aussi à rappeler que l'avenir d'une cité tient aussi à la détermination qu'elle met en oeuvre à assumer ce qu'elle a été. Se remémorer pour prévenir.
