brossura Il testo delinea, da una prospettiva psicodinamica, alcune caratteristiche personologiche dello stalker, come ad esempio: la presenza di una particolare impulsività che lo rende incapace di resistere all'urgenza di entrare in contatto con la vittima (o meglio, con il surrogato di una relazione con la vittima) nonostante la consapevolezza che questa condotta non sia gradita alla vittima stessa, o sia da essa esplicitamente temuta; una ridotta capacità di mentalizzazione che gli impedisce di prendere coscienza dei contenuti mentali della vittima, rimanendo così all'oscuro delle sensazioni che la sua condotta genera nella vittima, ma anche al riparo dalla percezione della sofferenza della vittima - questa caratteristica non è tuttavia necessaria per giustificare la condotta di stalking se teniamo conto della presenza di impulsività. Per gli autori, questi tratti di personalità qualificano un particolare assetto psicopatologico che porta a definire il comportamento di stalking come una "dipendenza relazionale" per nulla diversa, se non nelle caratteristiche peculiari della condotta, dai numerosi altri tipi di dipendenza già noti. Lo stalker agirebbe la condotta di stalking in relazione ad una vittima ma, principalmente, in relazione alla relazione stessa: la vittima sarebbe perciò in qualche modo un mezzo e non un fine del comportamento persecutorio.
