Dove con dottrina teologica, canonica, civile, filosofica, medica, storica, e poetica si discorre di tutte quelle cose, che al giudice delle cause criminali possono avvenire. Dato in luce dal dottor Ottaviano Carlo Cospi.
In Fiorenza, nella Stamperia di Zanobi Pignoni, 1643, volume unico, in-4, legatura settecentesca che riutilizza due pergamene più antiche (probabilmente smontate da rilegature di libri di formato inferiore), con dorso rinforzato in carta decorata antica e titolo calligrafato su tassello in carta, pp. 610, [2]. Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con stemma mediceo, 23 incisioni xilografiche nel testo (fra cui forme geometriche, la pianta di un passaggio segreto, mobili a doppio fondo, teschi e ossa umane) e una tavola allegorica in rame fuori testo (che quasi mai si trova) raffigurante un liuto senza una corda su cui si poggia una cicala e con motto latino "Ut suppleat" - simbologie per la stonatura delle perversioni del genere umano, sostenuta però dall'intelletto personificato dall'apollinea cicala -. Rara opera seicentesca sul diritto criminale scritta da Antonio Maria Cospi, giudice in varie sedi dello Stato toscano fra la fine del Cinquecento e l'inizio del Seicento, ed edita postuma dal nipote Ottaviano. Si tratta di un testo di pratica giudiziaria che tenta di organizzare i ricordi e le conoscenze professionali dell'autore. Si spazia infatti dalla trattazione scientifica alla spicciola quotidianità del criminalista, passando per la superstizione e l'aneddotica. Il Cospi si sofferma nella prima parte sulla deontologia del giudice, indicando la lussuria e quindi - in una visione fortemente antifemminile - la donna come "ianua diabuli". Nella seconda parte tratta gli ambiti della criminalità, soprattutto quelli fra reato e peccato, quali la magia, la divinazione, l'eresia, la stregoneria. Nella terza, oltre che su negromanzia, avvelenamenti, stupri, aborti, ladri, zingari e bari (alle carte o ai dadi), si sofferma a lungo sull'importanza della ricognizione del cadavere e del luogo del suo ritrovamento. Ci troviamo di fronte a un quasi manuale per "la scena del crimine", con tanto di descrizioni dettagliate e illustrazioni. L'autore sostiene proprio che il giudice necessiti di conoscenze scientifiche, anatomiche, chimiche e di disegno, oltre a quelle prettamente giuridiche e morali, per poter analizzare al meglio e mettere a verbale ogni caso in modo critico. Altro concetto innovativo e fondamentale è quello della testimonianza, intesa come interrogatorio al fine di trarre indizi dall'esame del reo e vista come unica via laddove la scienza non può arrivare. Dalle bibliografie a nostra disposizione (Piantanida/Diotallevi/Livraghi 1948, Michel 1970 e la rivista "Le Carte e la Storia" edita da Il Mulino 2002) questa del 1643 risulterebbe come prima edizione, anche se, probabilmente in tempi successivi, ne sarebbe stato censito un unico esemplare, alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze, datato invece 1638. Più probabilmente però, secondo la nostra interpretazione, si tratterebbe di un errore tipografico sulla data di quest'ultimo esemplare: MDCXXXVIII (1638) invece di MDCXXXXIII (1643). La carta Oo presenta uno strappo con perdita di qualche carattere; minuto camminamento di tarlo alle 6 carte da Vv3 a Xx4, solamente marginale; alcuni fascicoli leggermente bruniti per la fattura della carta. Comunque un bell'esemplare.

This pair of true crime scrapbooks assembled and maintained by the Vaughn Police Patrol from the Great Depression through the 1960s offer an invaluable primary source for the evolution of the Seattle Police Department Special Police volunteers and private security police “Merchant Police†forces over four decades including Washington’s first Merchant Policewoman. The first album opens with a photo of a battered young Vaughn followed by clippings of one of his earliest cases in 1933 that he was called as witness in which Freda Mills succeeded during a jury trial in overturning a drunk driving conviction in which she had wrapped the family laundry truck around a telephone pole after drinking three beers. By 1935 Vaughn was involved in a gun battle with two burglars looting the East Lynn Tavern who later turn out to be the notorious Harry Paulos and Joe Naples connected with several other murders and robberies including two Puyallup policemen; he aids in the capture of two teenage carjackers who kidnapped 5 people from Seattle to Portland OR in 1935 arrested notorious safecracker Ted Hatfield after he chased down Hatfield and and accomplice who had attached dynamite to plow off the door of the safe in the Casa Villa Restaurant with his Doberman Pinscher named “Tasso;†who was also instrumental in 1939 with nabbing three teenage car thieves after car chase and crash by the thieves with clippings mugshots and police department bulletins filling out the details. Helen Sorensen b. 1920 began her crime-fighting career with the Vaughn Police Patrol when Vaughn asks his secretary to fill in and start working as an undercover surveillance officer for the Merchant Police and in May 1950 she aids in capturing ex-con safecrackers Gerald Drennan and Clarence Pugh first by calling on the car’s mobile radio-telephone and then held the escaping suspects for police while holding the shotgun on them. Included are the statements by Monty Vaughn Chief of Detectives Emile Vallet suspect statements by Drennan and Pugh their mugshots and glowing clippings touting the efforts of Ms. Sorensen. These are followed by photos of Sorensen in Merchant Police uniform holding flashlight dated 1953 together with an extended article by Pacific NW author Lucile McDonald “Merchant Patrolwoman: Catching Robbers Trying Doors and Checking Furnaces are All Parts of Mrs. Helen Sorensen’s Job.†Further by clippings of her catching burglary suspects in 1956 and again in 1962 and the “shotgun-toting†woman catching burglars trying to loot a Standard Service Tire Co. in 1962 on Denny Way. Although Helen Sorensen in the several articles included here as well as the extensive extra by McDonald is listed as a widow and her husband killed while serving in the US Navy on submarines we could find no matching census or city directories for the addresses provided or matching the vital statistics information. Vaughn 1901-1966 was originally a brake inspector after World War I in Pennsylvania moved to Los Angeles became a machinist in Seattle by 1930 and a police photographer by 1932 before setting up his Merchant Police agency. La dissoluzione politica e militare dello Stato islamico rappresenta l'occasione per studiare la cosiddetta "terza ondata" del jihad, composta da figli di immigrati, cresciuti ai margini delle città occidentali e intrappolati in un'identità sospesa. L'islam radicale ha offerto a questi giovani un'ideologia capace di ricomporre le loro frammentate storie di vita e un orizzonte di significato per trasformare in riscatto il "quietismo" dei padri, divenendo combattenti e martiri in Occidente o nel Califfato. L'ideologia islamica radicale ha così fornito una cornice identitaria che, travalicando i confini dell'appartenenza nazionale, sociale ed economica, ha reso i giovani, maschi e femmine, parte di una umma globale. Il volume analizza i processi di radicalizzazione - e i luoghi di proselitismo, con particolare attenzione al web e al carcere - dei jihadisti europei, tratteggiando le biografie di quanti hanno combattuto la guerra santa. Le ragioni dell'adesione all'islam radicale sono interpretate alla luce delle teorie criminologiche che muovono dal concetto di frustrazione anomica e indagano i meccanismi di costruzione della marginalità sociale e della pericolosità criminale. La subcultura jihadista - che trasforma lo stigma in segno positivo e di distinzione - viene dunque intesa quale soluzione collettiva ai problemi di adattamento in una società escludente.
