La vita di Girard riserverà ancora molte sorprese, diventerà giornalista, autore di testi teatrali, sosterrà la causa algerina, e morirà a Barcellona nel 1987. Il mistero del triplice omicidio nel castello di Escoire non è stato mai risolto e intorno alla vita dell'unico sospettato è nato un mito di ambiguità nera e demoniaca. Philippe Jaenada ha vestito i panni dell'investigatore e si è immerso negli archivi, ha scovato indizi, ha studiato l'inchiesta e il processo sullo sfondo della Francia degli anni '40. Il suo Girard è un uomo tormentato e brillante, insopportabile e combattivo, un difensore dei deboli e degli sventurati, sempre in guerra con quelli che simboleggiano l'ordine, la serietà, la legge. Da questa immersione profonda nei fatti, nelle parole e nei silenzi, scaturisce un racconto che contamina il reportage con l'umorismo, il romanzo di famiglia con l'arte della digressione, ed è il ritratto fluviale e appassionante dell'intera, enigmatica esistenza di Henri Girard.
