Edited by Julian Hawthorne the son of Nathaniel of "The Scarlet Letter" and "House of Seven Gables" fame. Julian was something of a prodigal son convicted and spending a year in federal prison for stock fraud but also a well-known and respected crime and supernatural fiction writer as well as a journalist. He covered the Spanish-American War and the Stanford White murder case for the Hearst newspapers while working hard to support his wife and eight children. This 10-volume set which broke new ground when issued in 1909 includes many authors not considered crime writers in their day -- Balzac and Voltaire for example or Kipling and Stevenson -- while providing samples of "expected" writers such as Poe Collins and Conan Doyle. First Printing First Edition Thus. Each volume about 350 pages 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches quarter-bound in red faux leather over red cloth-covered boards with gold title boxes on the spine and each volume illustrated with a black & white frontispiece. None of the books is fault free: All have some foxing and staining on text edges end papers and around illustrations. All text edges are to some degree soiled some very lightly others quite heavily. Also some volumes' frontispieces have come loose from the binding though all are present with their tissue protectors. The previous owner's name and date are neatly written on the fep of each book. The covers show only minimal edge and surface wear. That all said this very scarce complete set looks quite presentable on the shelf and contains more than 3000 pages of good writing. Sold only as a set. Sorry but the set is fairly bulky and heavy and will require about $12 extra postage. Also we are unable to accept priority/express orders or orders from outside the U.S. . From Publishers Weekly In 1986 Native American Marine sergeant Clayton Lonetree informed the CIA that during his Moscow embassy tour he had made contact with the KGB. Lonetree naively hoped the CIA would assign him as a double agent. Thus began the "sex-for-secrets" scandal reported around the world in which the security of the U.S. embassy in Moscow was called into question and the young Lonetree was pilloried as the prime villain. From Library Journal If true since the story is told by a member of Lonetree's defense team this account confirms the old adage that military justice is to justice as military music is to music. Coming on the heels of Ronald Kessler's Moscow Station LJ 5/15/89 Headley's story is persuasive about the less-than-disastrous nature of Lonetree's part in supposed intelligence leaks at the U.S. embassy in Moscow. And it is no less persuasive whatever the degree of Lonetree's guilt about the kangaroo nature of court-martial justice. After reading this and Kessler's book the inescapable conclusion is that the Lonetree trial whatever else had a strong dose of bureaucratic cover-up to it. At the least the two volumes each shocking in their own way suggest the need for a Congressional inquiry. A piece in a larger puzzle. - H.
