Le Serment Après avoirfait campagne en 1939-40 avec un régiment d’autos-mitrailleuses le chef d’escadron Bernard Champcourt est envoyé à Vichy où malgré les restrictions de l’armistice on s’efforce de conserver à la France un semblant d’armée. C'est là qu’en août 1941 il apprend que le Maréchal Pétain reprenant une pratique abolie depuis soixante-dix ans a décidé d’exiger des cadres de l’armée un serment de fidélité. Après des discussions passionnées avec ses camarades Bernard Champcourt décide de prêter serment. Désormais il est lié par sa promesse et la stricte obéissance à ses chefs légitimes devient sa règle de conduite. Rien ne l’en fait dévier ni le départ pour Londres de Chevennes son meilleur ami ni l’inaction dans laquelle le jette à partir de novembre 1942 la dissolution de l’armée d’armistice. Cette obéissance poussée à l'extrême l’entraîne loin et à la Libération il est arrêté et c’est à Chevennes devenu un important chef F. F. I. qu’il doit d’échapper à la mort. Mais son sauveur lui impose d’émigrer au Maroc espagnol où sous une fausse identité il vivra misérablement désespéré de ne pouvoir reprendre sa place dans une armée où sévit l’épuration la plus systématique. Cette histoire relatée de façon poignante et avec l’art du récit que possède Jacques Weygand met en lumière le conflit — trop oublié — qui a déchiré beaucoup d’officiers de carrière entre 1940 et 1944.
