‎Un trio d'ouvrages de la bibliothèque du majordome de Madame de Staël et de Louis-Philippe PROVENANCE : Joseph Uginet (Versailles, 1771 - Paris, 1853), ex-libris « J. Uginet » contrecollé sur les contreplats supérieurs et tampon humide rouge « BIBLIOTHEQUE DE STE PÉRINE » aux titres. Entré au service de Germaine de Staël comme simple valet de chambre vers 1790, Uginet devint vite son homme de confiance. Passé au service de Louis-Philippe d'Orléans en 1814, il sera nommé, en 1830, grand-maître des valets de la Cour. Après la révolution de 1848, il se retira à Sainte-Périne, maison de retraite onéreuse où il décédera ; il possédait une bibliothèque de cinquante volumes qui forma le fond de la bibliothèque de l'institution. Histoire, fort estimée en son temps, de la révolution portugaise de 1640. Impression sur papier bleuté. L'abbé de Vertot fit paraître son Histoire de la Conjuration du Portugal en 1689, et connut aussitôt le succès : la Glorieuse Révolution anglaise venait de s'achever, et l'intelligentsia littéraire, intriguée par les événements, fouillait l'histoire à la recherche de parallèles. Madame de Sévigné, Bossuet et le très critique père Bouhours louèrent tous l'élégance de son style. En 1701, l'auteur publia, sous le titre Histoire des Révolutions du Portugal, une nouvelle édition de l'ouvrage augmentée de détails sur la monarchie portugaise et sur Alphonse IV, qui régnait alors sur le pays. Il signa également, entre autres ouvrages, une Histoire des révolutions arrivées dans le gouvernement de la République romaine et une Histoire des Révolutions de Suède dont le succès fut tel que la cour de Stockholm chargea un envoyé de l'engager à composer une histoire de Suède. Petit manque à la coiffe de tête, coins et coupes frottés, papier bruni à certains cahiers. [AVEC]Réimpression de l'édition parue à en 1755 à Amsterdam chez J. Schreuder & Pierre Mortier le jeune, avec la traduction de David Mazel (parue un an après l'originale anglaise et fort décriée par Locke, bien qu'influente en France) et des notes par Rousset de Missy. Cette édition avait déjà été réimprimée en 1780 à Amsterdam, chez Bartelemi Vlam. Paru anonymement en 1689, ce double-essai, dans lequel Locke justifie les réformes engagées par Guillaume III au lendemain de la Glorieuse Révolution, n'atteignit la notoriété que dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle. La déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis en reprend textuellement quelques éléments. Petit manque à la coiffe supérieure, coins frottés, papier uniformément bruni, pâle mouillure angulaire à quelques cahiers, manque marginal aux pp. 37-40. [AVEC]Première édition de cette troisième traduction française du Vicaire de Wakefield, avec une préface sur la vie de l'auteur. L'ouvrage est illustré en frontispice de deux gravures réalisées par Adam d'après Huot. Publié pour la première fois en 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield connut un succès immédiat. Considéré tantôt comme un roman sentimental, tantôt comme une parodie du genre, l'ouvrage de Goldsmith marqua durablement la littérature à venir : il est ainsi cité aussi bien par Stendhal (Vie de Henri Brulard) que par Jane Austen (Emma), Schopenhauer (« L'art d'avoir toujours raison »), Mary Shelley (Frankenstein), Charles Dickens (David Copperfield, Le conte de deux cités) ou encore Goethe (Les souffrances du jeune Werther).
