‎German Mercenary Expatriates in the U. S. & Canada Following the American Revolution‎

‎Baltimore: Clearfield Co. New. 2006. Paperback. It is commonly overlooked that the American Revolution witnessed one of the larger waves of German arrivals in the Americas up to that time. Unlike earlier streams of immigrants the nearly 30000 Germans who arrived at Americas shores between 1776 and 1783 were not farmers craftsmen or merchants; rather they were mercenary soldiers dispatched to fight for the most part in support of George IIIs goal of stemming the tide of the Revolution. Civilian immigration to the Americas during this period ceased owing to British control of the high seas. Despite their service to the British Crown many German mercenaries opted to seek their fortunes in the new U. S. Or Canada following American Independence. This phenomenon was of great interest to esteemed genealogist Clifford Neal Smith who during the 1970s and 1980s researched the identities of 18th- and 19th-century German Americans whose whereabouts had been locked away in obscure German sources. This volume on German mercenaries combines three separate booklets in Clifford Neal Smiths German-American Genealogical Research Monograph Series. . Clearfield Co paperback‎

‎Nineteenth-Century Emigration from Kreis Simmern Hunsrueck Rheinland-Pfalz Germany to Brazil England Russian Poland and the United States of America‎

‎Baltimore: Clearfield Co. New. 1982 2004. Paperback. 35 pages. Mr. Smith extracted the names in the Simmern Kreis/Rhineland-Falz booklet from two articles published in Germany in 1935 and 1938. Approximately 56% of these individuals emigrated to the U.S. 37% to Brazil and 5% to England. In this work the author has arranged the names according to hometown of origin and thereunder by the country of destination. In most cases we learn the emigrant's name year emigrated occupation date of birth and frequently the city or state of destination. The roughly 2500 persons named in the volume whose dates of emigration span the last 70 years of the 19th century are easily found by means of the surname index at the back. . ‎Nineteenth-Century Germans to America: A Consolidation of Six Pamphlets Identifying Emigrants from Baden-Wurttemberg Hamburg Bremen Nordrhein-Westfalen Rheinland-Pfalz and Schleswig-Holstein‎

‎Baltimore: Clearfield Co. New. 2006. Paperback. 6 parts in 1. Index. . 247 pages. This latest consolidation of works of Clifford Neal Smith encompasses transcriptions or abstracts of emigration notices previously published in six separate booklets. The articles pertain to the following localities: Beihingen am Neckar Baden-Wuerttemberg Hamburg and Bremen Recklinghausen Nordrhein-Westfalen Siegkreis Nordrhein-Westfalen Kreis Simmern Hunsrueck Rheinland-Pfalz and the Island of Foehr Schleswig-Holstein. For the most part these transcriptions span the period 1840 to 1900; however the Beihingen and especially the Kreis Simmern components refer to 18th-century emigrants. The U. S. Was the destination of most but not all of these immigrations. As one might expect in a work of this nature the source and scope of the information varies. For Beihingen am Neckar Mr. Smith relied upon a 1939 German-language publication by Albrecht Ritz entitled Gestalten und Ereignisse aus Beihingen am Neckar. The Bremen and Hamburg lists were extracted from the Allgemeine Auswanderungs-Zeitung German Emigration Newspaper published in Rudolstadt Thuringia. On the whole however Mr. Smith compiled his information from obscure sources published in German that otherwise would have eluded even the most fastidious researcher. Many of the entries are rather detailed providing the names of the immigrant age occupation next of kin sponsors dates of birth name of ship and date of departure. For the most part researchers can expect to learn the passenger's name place of origin number of persons traveling with and year of departure. . Clearfield Co paperback‎

‎Reconstructed Passenger Lists for 1850: Hamburg to Australia Brazil Canada Chile And the United States Parts 1 2 3 & 4‎

‎Baltimore: Clearfield Co. New. 1981. Paperback. Index. 4 parts in 1. . 288 pages. Most German and Swiss emigrants to the New World during the middle of the 19th century left from the Port of Bremen. Sadly those lists were destroyed during the final year of World War II. The lists that have survived from this period pertain to the port of Hamburg and are in the custody of the Hamburg police authorities. For the early years of this migration the original Hamburg lists do not exist; instead researchers must rely on transcriptions made by police clerks in large bound registers. Working from microfilm copies of the Hamburg police lists Clifford Neal Smith has here reconstructed the identities of about 7000 Hamburg passengers whose names were found among 60 separate lists for the year 1850. For each entry the compiler provides the following information: passenger's surname given name occupation birthplace and reference number from the police register. The lists themselves were published originally as the first three Parts of this volume each of which concluded with a surname index. The fourth and final Part contains the author's supplemental notes on the emigrants' places of origin-a heroic effort on the part of Mr. Smith to differentiate among the 1750 places of origin mentioned in the police lists. Since the original lists do not distinguish among villages of the same name the author provides his own alphabetical listing of every place name from eastern and central Germany Poland Czechoslovakia Austria and Hungary from which an emigrant may have originated-complete with latitude and longitude coordinates. . ‎American Surnames‎

‎Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 1995. Trade Paperback. Index. . 370 pages. Elsdon Smith begins this work with a discussion of the development of hereditary surnames and then he divides his subject into six broad categories: Classification of Surnames Surnames from Father's Name patronymics Surnames from Occupation or Office Surnames from Description or Action nicknames Surnames from Places and Surnames Not Properly Included Elsewhere. In these areas he expounds on such subjects as abbreviated names surnames derived from animals changes of names by immigrants ethnic names names indicating nationality surnames from place names European names Asian names names of Blacks and Indians surnames without vowels surnames from Christian names landscape names Jewish names surnames from history garbled names comic or odd names and hyphenated names. The list is almost endless and Mr. Smith is unstinting in his explanation of the roots and meaning of these names. In addition he provides a list of the 2000 most common surnames in the United States today ranked in order of frequency with an estimate of the number of persons bearing each name. . ‎Estate Inventories: How to Use Them‎

‎Morgantown: Masthof Press. New. 2000. Trade Paperback. 137 pages. You can learn a lot about a person from his or her possessions -- even the junk. Ask any archeologist or forensic scientist. A midden trash heap may hold the answer to an archeologist's prayers and a garbage bag may yield gold to the trained criminologist. You may well have some of your ancestor's possessions but it is unlikely that you have many or even that you have something from each of them. While recovery of the physical objects may be an impossibility you may be able to get the next best thing -- a listing of these possessions. Estate inventories were listings of a deceased person's possessions made at the order of the court charged with settling the estate. Many of these inventories are extant and available to the researcher. Some are long and involved; some are as short as a few lines. They were made of the estates of the wealthy the not-so-wealthy and even the relatively poor. Since estate inventories rarely yield direct genealogical evidence they are often overlooked even by researchers who already know of their existence This is unfortunate because they often provide the researcher with something that genealogical charts and tables cannot -- a glimpse into your ancestor's personal life. . ‎Davidson County Tennessee Deed book "P": Personal property deeds 15 November 1821-13 February 1829‎

‎Heritage Books. New. 1997 2010. Trade Paperback. 176 pages. A companion book to the authors Davidson County Tennessee Deed Books T and W: 1829-1835. This volume transcribes personal property deeds for Davidson County Tennessee from 1821 to 1829 identifying family members and relationships for both white and black families. Records include deeds of trust deeds of gift deeds of transfer bills of sale mortgages marriage agreements powers of attorney and other agreements. These records are particularly full of slave sales and therefore a most valuable resource for African-American researchers. Slaves are listed by family units; ages and physical descriptions are included. The inventories give us a picture of the early days in Middle Tennessee listing the home furnishings books in the home library and early business inventories down to the last set of sheets in the Nashville Inn. ‎Davidson County Tennessee Deed books "T" and "W" 1829-1835‎

‎Heritage Books. New. 1994 2010. Trade Paperback. 394 pages. Tennessee genealogists and historians will revere this text. Its information has been taken from the original Davidson County deed books. The work includes transcripts of deeds and new indexes of the data. Such a text as this however was needed because the original index is arranged solely by the names each transaction was registered under. In most cases many more names lie within the body of the document. The author of this book has endeavored to make every recorded name accessible via index to aid the researcher. These records identify family members and relationships for both white and black families in Davidson County between 13 February 1829 and 27 August 1835 a time when the census identified only the white head of household; a time when many wills identified only the husband leaving his property to my beloved wife and children; a time when there was no other record for the slave family. The books index listing refers to the original deed book page entry. Included are the deed records whose inventories of personal property give a truly unique picture of the society of the day. Indexes cover first and last names slave names and places. . Heritage Books paperback‎

‎War of 1812 Veterans in Texas‎

‎Southern Historical Press. New. 1979 1994. Revised Edition. Hardcover. New index. 468 pages. This book encompasses 650 men known to have set foot on Texas soil at some time during their lives who rendered military or public service during the War of 1812 period - from 1784 when the Amer. Revolution ended to 1815 when the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 was ratified. Information when available includes the places and dates of birth and death; place and date of marriage and the name of the celebrant of the ceremony; the names of all wives; children's dates of birth and names of their spouses; place of enrollment for service and places of residences in Texas and those before arriving; the names of veteran's immediate superior; cross references to the pension and bounty land file records in the National Archives which include the names of relatives friends and neighbors who served as witnesses. Appendix I is a special list of more than 100 widows with maiden names given showing the place and date of death of husband who did not himself enter Texas. Appendix II lists sources offering further information. This newly revised edition contains some 50 additional Veterans who Mrs. Smith has researched and found since the first edition in 1979. This reference work is important for Texas research and equally valuable for historical and genealogical research on non-Texas families; witnesses for example were living all across the present-day United States from Maine to California - the scope is truly national .
