Whitley Edythe R.
Marriages of Claiborne County Tennessee 1838-1850 & Campbell County Tennessee 1838-1853
Baltimore: Genealogical Pub Co. New. 1983. Trade Paperback. 112 pages. #6342. The late Edythe Whitley was one of the foremost Tennessee genealogists of this century and the compiler of more than a score of Tennessee marriage books. This one which deals with Claiborne and Campbell counties is among her most frequently consulted. Claiborne County was erected in 1801 from parts of Grainger and Hawkins counties and Campbell County from parts of Anderson and Claiborne five years later. This book comprises the earliest surviving marriage records of both of these strategically-placed counties. The records date from 1838 when marriage registers came into official use in the state. Altogether some 2000 marriages are listed here each giving the names of the bride and groom the date of issue of the license and the date of the marriage. . Genealogical Pub Co paperback

Whitley Edythe Rucker
Pioneers of Davidson County Tennessee
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co. Very Good. 1979. Trade Paperback. Previous owner's name and address label on inside cover . 84 pages. This magnificent little book is characterized by lists of early Davidson County pioneers taxpayers militiamen Revolutionary and War of 1812 soldiers and pensioners and grantees of land in Tennessee. The vast amount of data in this work is far out of proportion to its size for no fewer than 5000 Davidson County inhabitants are identified. Included are Settlers on the Cumberland River 1780; North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee 1784; Davidson County Taxpayers 1787; Davidson County Militia 1812; Officers in the Tennessee Militia 1811; Pension List for West Tennessee 1818; and Davidson County Pension Lists for 1832 1840 and 1883. The militia list of 1812 which consists of a list of 2235 free male inhabitants is generally considered the only practical alternative to the lost 1810 census of Davidson County and one might say that the entire work compensates for the absence of a census for the first thirty-five years of the county's existence. . Whitley Compiler Edythe Rucker; with an index by Gary Parks
Marriages of Sumner County Tennessee 1787-1838
Baltimore: Clearfield Co. New. 2005. Trade Paperback. 150 pages. Edythe Whitley spent a lifetime studying the genealogical records of Middle Tennessee--an area originally in the domain of North Carolina. This volume is one of several produced by Mrs. Whitley which contain abstracts of the marriage records of the counties of Middle Tennessee this one dealing with pivotal Sumner County. When it was erected in 1786 Sumner County was still a part of North Carolina. It was an important crossroads in the flow of migration and its records are therefore indispensable in the quest for ancestors who migrated south and west from Virginia Kentucky and North Carolina. This present volume contains abstracts of approximately 5000 marriage records. For some unknown reason the Clerk of Sumner County did not record the early marriages in a book or ledger as was the custom. The marriages abstracted here derive instead from original bonds and unrecorded licenses found amongst loose papers in the courthouse in Gallatin. For this reason and for reasons that are manifest in the nature of the records themselves this work assumes an importance of awesome dimensions. As is customary in such publications the marriages are arranged in alphabetical order by the surname of the groom. The bride-to-be the date of the bond or license and the names of ministers witnesses and bondsmen make up the balance of each entry. Virtually every entry gives the name of at least one bondsman usually a relative and all persons mentioned in the entry except the groom minister or J.P. are indexed the combined total of names amounting to some 15000. .
