"The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".‎

Alle wichtigen Quellen zur Geschichte dieser Zeit sind nicht aus Ägypten selbst überliefert. Auch die gut bekannten hieroglyphisch beschrifteten Stelen der aus dem südlichen Nachbarland Ägyptens stammenden Äthiopenkönige und eigentlichen Gegner der Assyrer wurden außerhalb Ägyptens gefunden. Insbesondere aber sind es die Annalen der assyrischen Könige, ohne die wir kaum etwas über diese Epoche wüßten, in der Ägyptens über mehr als zwei Jahrtausende währende weitestgehende Isolation endgültig aufgebrochen wurde. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit wird versucht, die assyrischen Quellen für den Übergang der 25. zur 26. Dynastie, also der Äthiopen- oder Könige von Kusch zur Saitenzeit zusammenzutragen, sie zuerst für sich und dann zusammen mit dem ägyptischen Material historisch zu analysieren. Er trat vor allem mit Arbeiten zur politischen Ideengeschichte, zur Geschichte von Papsttum und Kirche, zur Geschichte der Stadt Rom, zur päpstlichen Diplomatie im Quattrocento sowie zur fränkischen und vor allem pommerschen Landesgeschichte hervor. Für die Monumenta Germaniae Historica erwarb er sich bleibende Verdienste als Editor der ältesten Lebensbeschreibung Ottos von Bamberg, der sogenannten ?Prüfeninger Vita?. Gegenstand des vorliegenden Buches sind die Wechselwirkungen von Romidee und Rompolitik im Ringen von Kaiser, Papst und städtischer Kommune, die die Geschichte des 12. und 13. Jahrhundert weithin bestimmen. Die ideengeschichtlichen Grundlagen dieser Auseinandersetzungen wurden zum einen durch den neuartigen imperialen Romherrschaftsanspruch Kaiser Heinrichs V., zum anderen durch die vielgestaltige Romidee des Montecassineser Mönchs Petrus Diaconus gelegt.
