Internally very fine clean and fresh. 62 2 pp. � Scarce first printing of this collection of tax edicts issued by Pietro Leopoldo II grand-duke of Tuscany. The intention was to raise the tax-level for the rich and for companies in Siena in order to spend the extra income on the poor and needy. In this sense the present collection of tax-edicts represents one of the very earliest European attempts to create economic social reform in the spirit of the Enlightenment. This became a source of inspiration for the French Constitution. <br><br>Pietro Leopoldo initiated a process of political social and economic change in Siena which lasted several decades into the 19th century. It has been argued that this turned Siena from a patrician city - symbolized by the nobility - into a middleclass and bourgeois city. Partly due to laws and guidelines presented in the present work Siena went from being a city whose most significant features were convents and monasteries to being a city characterized by its public and civil institutions. <br><br>Leopold also approved and collaborated on the development of a political constitution said to have anticipated the promulgation of the French Constitution which bore some similarities to the Virginia Bill of Rights of 1778. Leopold's concept of this was based upon respect for the political rights of citizens and upon a harmony of power between the executive and the legislative. <br>Leopold developed and supported many social and economic reforms. Smallpox vaccination was made systematically available and an early institution for the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents was founded. Leopold also introduced radical reforms to the system of neglect and inhumane treatment of those deemed mentally ill. On 23 January 1774 the "legge sui pazzi" law on the insane was established the first of its kind to be introduced in all of Europe allowing steps to be taken to hospitalize individuals deemed insane. unknown

On peut lire les biographies de Gregorio Leti de deux manières : en considérant Leti comme un historien et lui repprocher, comme le font toutes les anciennes bibliographies, son inexactitude, ou alors comme on lit un romancier et dans ce cas on est séduit par son goût pour le merveilleux. Leti (né à Milan en 1630) était un aventurier : jeunesse dissipée, liberté de mœurs, goût pour les voyages. Ses errances le conduisirent un jour à Genève où il se fit calviniste et publia des écrits stairiques contre Rome. Ce zèle de converti lui valut la protection des magistrats genevois qui lui offrirent en 1674 des lettres de bourgeoisie, une faveur qu’ils n’avaient jamais accordé à personne avant lui. Mais en 1679 il dut quitter Genève pour avoir publié des satires contre quelques familles de la ville. Après un bref séjour en France où les protestants étaient de nouveau inquiétés, il gagna l’Angleterre. Charles II l’accueillit avec bonté, lui offrit 1000 écus et lui parmit d’écrire une histoire d’Angleterre. Un fois de plus, l’ouvrage déplut à cause de certains traits satiriques. En 1682 Leti se réfugia à Amsterdam où il mourut en 1701.Bayle le présente comme un nouvel Arétin. On connaît surtout de Leti Le Putanisme de Rome, la continuation du Divorce céleste de Pallavicino et son roman sur les amours de Charles de Gonzague et de Marguerite de Rovère. In 18° (13,3×7,5 cm); 2 parti in un volume: (16), 224 pp. e 264, (24) pp. Bella legatura coeva in piena pelle con dorso a 4 nervi, titolo e ricchi fregi in oro ai tasselli (strofinature e qualche minima mancanza ai margini). Alcune interessanti sottolineature e correzioni chiosate da mano coeva nel testo. Leggerissimo ed ininfluente alone in alcune pagine. Tagli marmorizzati. Prima edizione francese non comune di questa celebre polemica antipapale di Gregorio Leti nella quale si ridicolizza l’usanza papale del nepotismo. Figlio di un noble di origine bolognese e di una nobildonna milanese, Gregorio Leti nacque a Milano nel 1630. Dopo aver studiato presso i gesuiti, alla morte del padre, si trasferì a Roma nel 1644 da uno zio. Dopo vari sposatmenti che lo portarono anche a Orvieto nel 1655 seguì lo zio ad Acquapendente dove il parente era assunto a Vescovo. Nel 1660 lascia l’italia per Ginevra e in seguito al matrimonio con la figlia di un medico ginevrino si converte al calvinismo. Da questo momento in poi iniziano i suoi scritti polemici e satirici verso i papi. Il linguaggio e le immagini che Leti riproduceva nei suoi scritti erano assai licenziose tanto che fu costretto dalle autorità cittadine di Ginevra ad abbandonare la Svizzera. Raggiunse Colbert a Parigi e questi gli propose di ricoprire la carica di “Historico di Lingua Italiana” di Luigi XIV ma decise di rifiutare la proposta perchè non voleva riconvertirsi al cristianesimo. Passò quindi in Inghilterra, siamo nel 1680. Ma anche qui la sua verve polemica e difficile ai compromessi lo portò a scontrarsi con il mondo politico inglese e fu di nuovo costretto alla fuga che lo portò in Olanda. Qui stretta amicizia con Pierre Bayle rimase fino alla morte avvenuta ad Amsterdam nel 1701. Prima edizione francese in buone condizioni di conservazione. Due soli esemplari censiti in ICCU. "He graduated from the University of London in 1884 and was trained for the Orthodox ministry at Jews College, London. From 1885 to 1889 he served the Bristol Hebrew Congregation. In 1889 he went to the United States as rabbi to a congregation in Sacramento, California, and from 1893 to 1901 he was assistant rabbi at Congregation Keneseth Israel, Philadelphia. From 1901 to 1917 he was rabbi of Congregation Rodef Shalom, Pittsburgh. During the Spanish-American War he was an army chaplain for a short period. Levy was famous in his day as a preacher; about 16 volumes of his sermons were published. He was active in local and international peace associations and in health, housing, and other welfare organizations in Pittsburgh" (Sefton D. Temkin in EJ) . No copies listed on OCLC. Exemplaire bien complet du rare et prophétique gravé représentant la foudre s'abattant sur la bastille en ruine et Louis XVI, au premier plan, sur un piédestal déclarant à des sujets agenouillés: "Soyez libre : vivez". Fondateurs du journalisme politique en France et polémiste redouté, Simon-Henri-Nicolas Linguet fut embastillé de 1780 à 1783 pour ses attaques contre de puissants personnages de l'ancien régime. "Ces "Mémoires" qu'il consacre à la prison d'État sont un ouvrage essentiel pour qui souhaite comprendre comment le mythe de la Bastille a enflé dans les années 1770-1780 alors même que la prison était de moins en moins utilisée et que Louis XVI approuvait en 1784 un projet, resté sans suite, pour la raser. Le frontispice est tout un symbole (…) pour Linguet qui achevait son livre par un appel direct à Louis XVI" (Marcel Biard). (Martin & Walter, 21597).
