‎"Le livre de M. Stephan envisage toute l'histoire du Protestantisme français et il a su en dégager les lignes principales. Reprenant les travaux de L. Febvre et E. G Léonard, il souligne « le profond besoin de renouvellement moral et religieux » qui marque la fin du XVe siècle et le début du XVIe siècle. S'élevant avec force contre l'attribution d'origines étrangères la Réforme française, il donne un utile tableau du mouvement évangélique en France. D'autre part, on sera intéressé par son étude de la diffusion du protestantisme en France. On lira aussi avec intérêt ce que M. Stephan nous dit des guerres de religion dont il a su nous donner un tableau suffisamment clair, de l'évolution du protestantisme français après l'Edit de Nantes dont il indique avec justesse et sobriété les ombres et les lumières... Comme son domaine s'étend jusqu'à nos jours (1960), comme elle utilise les travaux les plus récents, elle complète les histoires antérieures, aborde des problèmes jusqu'alors négligés et donne une plus grande consistance à l'étude de périodes trop souvent méconnues (Règne de Louis XIII, Consulat, Empire...). Sur un certain nombre de points, elle rectifie les jugements traditionnels, qu'il s'agisse par exemple, de l'existence d'un mysticisme réformé, des responsabilités de Madame de Maintenon et du Père Lachaise dans la Révocation de l'Edit de Nantes, des caractères du Second Désert, nettement distinct du premier, ou des origines de l'Edit de 1787. M. Stéphan possède toutes les qualités d'un excellent historien professionnel : le sens critique, la méfiance à l'égard des hypothèses aventureuses, le souci de « dater finement », la volonté de ne rien avancer qu'un document ne confirme. Dense et fortement nourri, son exposé n'est jamais alourdi par l'érudition. Un plan rigoureux donne à l'ouvrage une harmonieuse et puissante structure. (...) Nettement supérieur aux ouvrages de simple vulgarisation, le livre de M. R. Stéphan ne manquera pas de recevoir du grand public un accueil particulièrement favorable. ‎2 ouvrages reliés en un volume in-8, plein vélin de l'époque à petits rabats, lanières de cuir conservées. Edition originale de ces deux ouvrages, réfutation des théories exposées par Pierre Du Moulin, pasteur de Charenton, dans 'Les eaux de Siloé pour éteindre le Purgatoire...' (1603) où il niait l'existence du purgatoire. La première réfutation est due à un franciscain portugais, Suarez, confesseur de Henri IV et Évêque de Séez, qui rencontra Du Moulin. Les titres témoignent de la passion qui animait les auteurs et de la violence de cette controverse. (Caillet, 10418 pour le premier. Desgraves, 'Ouvrages de controverse entre catholiques et protestants', n°543 et 503. Pannier, 'L'Eglise réformée de Paris sous Henri IV', p.215 et p. 237). The front side features a suggested sample of a Gesell Scientific Currency Note entitled "United Provinces of Canada Currency Note". The "One Dollar" note includes twelve boxes, representing each month in 1936. With the passing of each month this note was declared to be subject to a 1% demurrage stamp charge. Presumably the motivation behind such an instrument was to encourage spending during the depths of the Great Depression, just as negative interest rates of more recent times have similarly been aimed. "Tomorrow morning you will receive in George Street from the Librarian of the House of Lords copies of my two Protests and of Lord Wynford's Protest on the 3rd Reading of the English Reform Bill. I wiosh my Protests to be sent to the Editor of the Standard & Lord Wynford has commissioned me to send his also. Five of the Protests have already appeared in that Paper - which had expressed as I was informed a wish to have them & a readiness to publish them & any others that might be sent to the Editor. It is on this footing that these Protests must be sent. It must on no account appear - nor must a word be said to entitle the Editor to conclude - whatever he may suppose - that either Lord Wynford or I have anything to do with sending them. They must be conveyed to the Editor to publish - if he shall think fit phrase underlined - and must be sent in consequence of his expressing a wish to have & a readiness to publish the Protests. If he does not think fit to publish them he may let it alone & retyurn them. They are not to be paid for as advertisements or otherwise. If you are kind enough to undertake to forward them to the Paper - the Person who takes them may speak or it may bewritten but I should think not with a name in the following sense - that the Protests of Lords H & W are sent to the Standard by one who has reason to know that they are correct in consequence of the readiness expressed by the Editor to make known to the Public the Protests aginst the BILL- - and in consequence of several having already appeared. It might be as well to send them in time for tomorrows sic Evening Paper - or Mondays at furthest. I called in George Street today hoping to catch you before you left your office - but I was too late. I beg if you have any objection to undertaking this office - that you will make no scruple of delivering it. You will find that I could hardly send my Protests in my own name Believe me to be .". POSTSCRIPT They told me at the House of Lords that they were not sent from thence to the Papers. Their not having been sent long ago was very stupid. I hope you will make Dr Coventry understand how absolutely inappropriate it was for me or any one else to make any amendments in so difficult a matter at such a stage - without warning or preparation & in si=uch a House! phrase underlined It was quite out of the question. The thing must now work its own way - if possible to correct them - as they shew themselves in the working of this elaborate & complicated & machine; Should thge Librarian not have sent them to your office in due time - perhaps you will send to him for them. I wrote my name in my two Protests - it would be better to scratch that out." He asks him to accept a copy of the Tauchnitz edition of his 'Iron Mask' 'the only one I happen to have by me'. He continues: 'As you are kind enough to express an interest in work of mine I may say that I expect to be in the West of Ireland next month in the interests of the Daily Chronicle - if you ever happen to see that paper - for which I am to write a special series of letters describing the present condition of that district.'
