Simon, Sir John (1816-1904). English pathologist, surgeon and a pioneer in public health reform
AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY ENGLISH PATHOLOGIST AND PIONEER PUBLIC HEALTH REFORMER SIR JOHN SIMON AS A MEMBER OF THE PRIVY COUNCIL.
May 21st circa 1860s. 1860s. Good. - A few words penned in black ink on part of a sheet of letterhead 5-1/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the embossed Privy Council seal printed in blind at the top. The paper is mounted on a piece of card of the same size. Signed "John Simon". The letterhead is slightly discolored from the mounting with 2 tiny brown marks near the top edge. The note was folded twice for mailing. There are glue marks remnants of paper & 2 ink notations on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>Simon writes that the change proposed by his correspondent is quite acceptable to him.<p>Sir John Simon 1816-1904 was an English pathologist surgeon and public health reformer. He held surgical posts at King's College Hospital and St. Thomas's Hospital in London from 1840 until 1876. Public health was not considered a responsibility of the government in the early 19th century. Parliament passed the Public Health Act of 1848 partly in response to Simon's influence and to deal with the threat of cholera and other public health problems. Simon was appointed the first Medical Officer of Health for the City of London. He was later made the head of the Medical Department of the Government and remained in that post until his retirement in 1876. Though he had no previous public health experience Simon's ongoing interest in pathology gave him a distinct advantage as a medical officer. He called for municipal action to provide adequate sanitary disposal and drainage improved standards of housing and upgrading of the water supply. His advocacy resulted in the Sanitary Act of 1875 which for the first time made a public health law universal and compulsory. Simon was also a member of Privy Council 1858-1876 and President of the Royal Society 1879-1880. May 21st, circa [1860s]. unknown

17 January 1975; on letterhead of Goldsmith Building Temple EC4 London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Dosse was the proprietor of Hansom Books publishers of ‘Books and Bookmen’ and six other arts magazines. 1 p 8vo. In good condition folded for postage. Addressed to ‘Mr. Dossé’ Dosse did not spell his name with an accent and signed ‘Louis Blom-Cooper’ the hyphen if hyphen it is consisting of a tiny dot. He is flattered by the request that he ‘contribute occasionally to Books & Bookmen’ and ‘in principle’ he is ‘very willing to review appropriate books’ having written ‘one or two reviews way back in the 1950s’. The only thing that causes him to hesitate is his ‘very limited time for much extra-curricular activity’ particularly at that moment. The American Prison System
Salem Oregon: Printed for the author at the Oregon State Penitentiary 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 262 pp. A fine copy in original cloth. Webb spent ten years incarcerated at the Oregon State Penitentiary providing him with more than sufficient material for this reasoned and well written critique. He argues that the prison system is purely punitive and utterly fails to rehabilitate prisoners: "Every prison is a school for crime.As a rule instead of prison changing the convict to an honest man it makes him a more vicious man. It generally destroys the little good character he has left." He identifies failures in the legal system sentencing prison employment programs and attempts at rehabilitation through religion. Although ultimately "more is expected of prisons than they can possibly fulfill" and other social reforms are needed to address the problem of crime Webb still believes that serious attempts at rehabilitation are worthwhile. "Force prisons out of politics and place men in charge who understand humanity. For of all tasks there is no greater than that of remaking men." Protestant libéral Premier pasteur de la paroisse protestante de Libourne jusqu'en 1877, Jules Steeg fut un fervent défenseur de la République. Elu député de la Gironde en 1881, il participa au cabinet Jules Ferry pour mettre en place l'école gratuite, laïque et obligatoire et fut nommé inspecteur général de l'enseignement primaire. Exemplaire partiellement débroché, percaline frottée, papier unifromement bruni.
