"Mohammed and Charlemagne" is Henri Perinne's final book which he did not live to see completed. He finished writing the first draft but the work of revision verifying and completing references fell to his daughter and one his most valued pupils. Judging by the quality of the narrative and the numerous footnotes they did a bang-up job. If you're a fan of Perinne as I am you won't be disappointed. The problem of the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages had always intrigued Professor Perinne and in researching and writing this book he finally had the chance to sink his teeth into the subject. The point he wished to emphasize was the close relationship between the conquests of Islam and the formation of medieval Europe of which the title alludes. In the preface his daughter Jacques Pirenne describes this book as the crowning achievement of his last years of work. The author drives home a number of interesting points. For one the various invading Germanic tribes after their initial conquests of Roman Gaul and Roman Italy assimilated into the population. They adopted the language laws and religion of the conquered. After a century or so "the Germans disappeared into the population" writes Pirenne. The economic life of the old Empire continued as before--East-West trade on the Mediterranean the lending of money at interest the minting of coins and the constant commercial activity of the cities. In other words the German conquests may have interrupted the cycle of commerce but only for a short time; it continued as vigorously as before once the dust had settled. The German kings meanwhile governed with the help of men who still preserved the literary and political traditions of Rome; taxes continued to be collected the Christian church continued to grow and slavery continued to perform much of the work. Reading and writing did not die during the Merovingian Dynasty 450-750 A. D. as once was thought. It was lost or nearly lost during the Carolingian Dynasty 750-1050 that followed. By 650 the Merovingian Dynasty was into decline which was hastened by the Muslin conquest of Africa Spain and southern Europe. Once Muslim ships took control of the Mediterranean East-West trade ceased and economic decline followed. The cities emptied the class of wealthy merchants vanished the minting of coins ceased papyrus disappeared and reading barely survived in but a few monasteries. Feudalism became the norm as everyone worked the land on large estates. The Pope still resided in Rome but the balance of political power shifted away from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe. Charlemagne who could not read realized his dream of ruling a wholly Christian empire but it was an agrarian empire with few of the amenities Western Europe had previously enjoyed. It wouldn't be until the 12th century after the Muslims no longer controlled the Mediterranean that commerce would revive and modern Europe would begin to emerge. EB; 293 pages . G.
