Autograph; 298 & printer's colophon pages; Publisher's dark brown pebbled cloth title lettered in gilt on the spine top edges gilt others uncut. A sumptuously produced catalogue of the superb collection of American colonial laws formed by Charlemagne Tower 1809-1889 lawyer soldier and businessman. Within ten days of the outbreak of hostilities at Ft. Sumter South Carolina on April 12 1861 Tower recruited some 270 Schuylkill County men to enter the Union Army under a three month enlistment agreement. This unit was referred to as the "Tower Guards" and they were created as Company H of the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment - attached to a brigade commanded by Major General Robert Patterson. Tower was installed as the unit's captain and he uniformed and armed his troops at his own expense. After the war Tower was credited with creating the mining industry in Minnesota as well as attracting settlers to the area. He was deeply involved in the mining industry in Pennsylvania as well and was part of the development of the Reading Railroad. Towns in three states are named after him. As a book-collector with the aid of C. S. R. Hildeburn who compiled this magnificent catalogue Charlemagne Tower formed the finest collection of American colonial-era law in the world. After his death the Tower family bequeathed this collection to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The family also paid for the production of this catalogue printed for the Historical Society by J. B. Lippincott Company. This is a particularly interesting copy with a presentation inscription from the collector's son on the front free endpaper: "To Paul L. Ford Esq. / with the compliments of / Charlemagne Tower Jr. / 9 January 1891 / Philadelphia." Tower's son and namesake is also interesting. He graduated from Harvard in 1872 and after extensive travels in Europe became a lawyer and businessman as his father was. But he became seriously interested in history and archaeology and became a professor in the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Minister to Austria-Hungary 1897�1899 for President McKinley before being transferred to Russia as Ambassador 1899�1902. Following his posting to St. Petersburg he served as Ambassador to Germany from 1902 to 1908 under President Theodore Roosevelt. The younger Tower was also a book collector of note; he gave a collection of 2300 Russian books to the library at the University of Pennsylvania. The man to whom he gave this copy of his father's catalogue was Paul Leicester Ford 1865-1902 - the novelist biographer and historian. Ford wrote several sucessful novels during his short life - titles include The Honorable Peter Stirling 1894 Story of an Untold Love Janice Meredith Wanted a Matchmaker and Wanted a Chaperone; collectors of decorative covers of the late nineteenth century will know his name. He is also still respected for a beautifully edited and crafted multi-volume edition of "The Writings of Thomas Jefferson" - as well as several biographies of major figures in early American history and a couple of bibliographies. Ford has lightly tipped proof sheets of his long review of this book to a front blank leaf. Ford's notice praises the collection as impossible to duplicate and makes a plea that fellow collectors give the PA Historical Society some consideration in their desire to fill in the few gaps of the Tower collection. The review is signed in type only with the initials P. L. F. but Ford has signed his name in full in ink at the bottom. Paul L. Ford's brother Worthington C. Ford became a noted historian and for many years was head of the manuscript collection at the Library of Congress. The other Ford brother Malcolm Webster Ford was at one time the most famous amateur athlete in the United States during the 1880s he was three times the American National Champion as "All Around Athlete" and in 1885-6 Malcolm Ford won National Championships in the long jump and both the 100 and 200 yard dash. The Ford family apparently did not approve of his devotion to athletics and although he married an heiress after a divorce he fell into grave financial difficulties. The brothers could not have been more different. Paul Leicester Ford had a spinal injury or deformity from his youth wore a brace and was less than five feet tall. Malcolm Ford went to his younger brother's house in Brooklyn Heights and fatally shot him then turning the gun on himself in 1902. Malcolm was 40 Paul L. Ford was 37. Following this unfortunate demise this copy subsequently became the property of Asa P. French noted Massachusetts lawyer and jurist who was U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts 1906-14. With the Asa P. French engraved bookplate on the front paste-down dated in ink 1922 and three clippings from catalogue entries for this catalogue from the 1920's. This copy is tight sound and clean but the spine ends are worn with loss of cloth shelf wear to bottom edges of the boards and the corners. ; Signed by Notable Personage Related; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item.
