Two text volumes with two folding maps 52 lithograph plates and many additional illustrations in the text; and two atlas volumes containing five large folding maps all in very good condition. Original blind-stamped browned cloth sunned at the spines mild bumping to corners some silver paint on front board of Volume II. Maps have some browning at the folds and some small splits but are very good overall. This American expedition was organized by the U.S. Navy Department and conducted in 1851-52 to determine the feasibility of opening the region to American agricultural and slaveholding interests. The explorers traveled to Chile and then to Lima Peru where Herndon pushed into the upper Amazon and Gibbon turned south through Bolivia and into Brazil. The two groups met up again in Serpa Brazil and continued down the Amazon to Para. Hill 803 describes the work as "a minute accurate and very interesting study on the aborigines of the Andes and on the geography of the Amazon and its tributaries" and Borba de Moraes p. 336 calls it "an excellent book on the regions cited." Three small pin holes on the large folding map Part I at the intersection of the folds. The second map in Part I has an approx. 3" closed split on the right side fold no loss of content. Part II large folding map has some light edge wear and tear toning and light creases underneath the title in bottom left corner. Maps and covers are in good condition. Illustrated cut out on the front paste down part II. Illustration has the printed name R. W. Williams Planter with Vista La written in old ink on the illustration.
