The expedition started in Peru and ended at the mouth of the Amazon. "An excellent book on the regions mentioned." - Borba de Moraes p.399 who lists just the three maps in the third volume this copy has two extra maps. In the original cloth the map case having been rebacked usually this book is found in appalling condition due to the poor quality of the paper. However this copy is particularly clean with very little browning of the text none on the plates and the maps are very good with only the occasional split. The covers on volume I are faded unevenly and volume II has been bound-in upside down. A very nice set of the first edition in the publisher's cloth. Front pastedowns each with pencilled owner's name and institutional rubber stamp no other markings; front free endpaper of vol. II starting to tear along inner margin. Mild to moderate foxing and spotting; a few text gatherings unopened. One plate in vol. I with short tear from outer margin turning into a narrow scrape extending about halfway into the upper portion of the image; one leaf in vol. Volume II Gibbons volume has textured brown cloth boards with impressed design. Board corners and spine ends are frayed. Rubbing and chipping. Cracked hinge.
