Edward Gibbon; Dean Milman; M. Guizot; William Smith
The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
ont> John Murray : London 1862 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nice vellum set of Edward Gibbon's influential history of the Roman Empire illustrated throughout including with folding maps. Complete in eight volumes. In a full vellum binding. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire has become one of the pillars of non-fiction writing since the first volume was published in 1776. Edward Gibbon embarked upon his greatest literary achievement seven years before it was first published and he stated that he was often frustrated and tempted to throw it away whilst working on it. Gibbon offers a condensed detailed and thorough history of the fall of the Roman Empire covering a period from 98 to 1590. On the journey he also looks at the history of Europe Christianity and the Church. Gibbon has been criticised for his flawed interpretations of various Religions with his scathing view on Christianity leading the book to be banned in several countries upon its publication Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece and two folding maps. Collated complete. Volume II with a folding map to the frontispiece and two maps to the rear. Collated complete. Volume III with a folding map to the frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume IV with a folding map to the frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume V with a folding map to the frontispiece and a folding map to the rear. Collated complete. Volume VI with a folding map to the frontispiece and a folding map to the rear. Collated complete. Volume VII with a folding map to the frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume VIII with a folding map to the frontispiece and a folding map to the rear. Collated complete. Edward Gibbons was a historian and Member of Parliament his poor health was consistently under threat during his childhood which led to him becoming widely read. He never married after a failed love affair with Suzanne Curchod in his youth Suzanne later became the wife to Jacques Necker and her daughter was the noted socialite and letter writer Madame de Stael. His first historical endeavour was a History of Switzerland which was never finished or published. He also wrote about the literary and social conditions of England at the time which was unfortunately considered a flop. With notes by Dean Milman and M. Guizot. With additional notes by William Smith. Bookplate to the front pastedowns 'Herbert S. Squanae'. Condition: In a full vellum binding. Externally smart. A little discolouration to the spines and boards as is usual with binding. Small amount of rubbing to the spines. Light marks to the boards. Front hinge of Volumes III and IV are starting but firm. Edward Gibbon
The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
88 1776 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An uncommon very early set of Edward Gibbon's historical masterpiece. With volumes II-VI being the first edition and volume I the second edition this leather bound library set retains very bright pages and the maps in a bright and clean state. Volume I is a second edition from 1776. Volumes II-VI are first editions from 1781-1788. It is not unusual to have a set whereby the first volume is not a first edition due to the scarcity of this publication. With a frontispiece to volume I. With 'Map of the Eastern Empire' bound in to the start of volume II and 'A Map of the Parts of Europe and Asia' to page 22 of this volume. With the 'Map of the Western Part of the Roman Empire' bound in to the start of volume III. The map of Constantinople was frequently cropped and bound in sideways. To this copy the map has retained its wide margins and is bound and folded the correct way which is very scarce. Norton Volumes II and III were published at the same time which is why some copies have the errata leaf of the third volume bound in volume II. To this set volume III's errata is to its own volume. With the errata to volumes II III at the start of the volumes. Volumes IV-VI have their errata to the rear of volume VI as called for. Collated all plates are present. The volumes have been bound without their half-titles as usual. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire traces the trajectory of Western civilisation from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium and therefore spans a nearly 1500 year period from 98 to 1590 of the Roman Empire. Therefore Gibbon discusses the history of early Christianity the Roman State Church as well as the history of Europe. The popularity of this work rests on Gibbon's objectivity and heavy use of primary sources. In the eighteenth century the use of primary sources for historical was very rare which was why his work was extremely popular. His methodology also became a model for later historians. Edward Gibbon wrote many historical works but is best known for this title. This is due to its quality the use of primary sources as well as the open criticism of organised religions. The work earned him a reputation as the first modern historian of Ancient Rome. A very smart set of this important historical work with smart new spines that blend with the original tree calf boards. Condition: In a full tree calf binding. Rebacked with some professional repairs to the board edges. Otherwise original boards have been preserved. Externally very smart with just a few light marks to the boards and some light rubbing to the extremities. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Folding maps have the occasional very small closed tear to the folds at the gutter. Tape repair to final leaf of volume I across the text which is still visible under the text. Small tidemark to the top of fore edge to volume III only affecting the occasional page margin. The very occasional scattered spots. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed. 88 hardcover
