Quarto six volumes bound in modern half calf over marbled boards by Bayntun-Riviere with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt gilt ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands all edges speckled red engraved frontispiece portrait of Gibbon by John Hall after Sir Joshua Reynolds in Vol. II three engraved folding maps half-titles in vols. I-III and V all 4 errata leaves lacking half-titles in vols. IV and VI vol. I with half-title. Strahan predicted the popularity of Gibbon's History and doubled the print run from 500 to 1000 copies during the publication process entailing the resetting of some sheets. Vol. I is in the first state with the cancellans leaves as described by Rothschild and the errata uncorrected. The gatherings a b and the author portrait are bound in the second volume. Grolier English 58; PMM 222; Rothschild 942. L4 restored at gutter with small loss to the text light dampstaining to the frontispiece portrait contemporary ownership inscription to the first title trimmed by the binder. In near fine condition. A very nice example. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in inimitable prose" PMM 222. Kitchin of the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire. Each book is bound in half-leather with decorated gilt panels to spine. The title panel and Volume Number panel in gilt on black. Marbled paper covered boards with brown endpapers. Each book carries the armorial bookplate of John James Lecky. Lecky was born in 1799 and was magistrate and deputy lieutenant of County Carlow where he served as High Sheriff in 1828. The books and contents are Very Good with light foxing in places. The maps are Very Good with the odd short closed tear to edges and in places poorly folded. Volume IV lacks it's Volume Number . The Bindings are firm and tight. There is some rubbing to covers as you would expect for books over 200 years old but they still have a pleasing antiquarian appearance. Pictures available. A very good set in contemporary full polished calf with morocco spine labels gilt compartments all edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Outer joints neatly repaired in volume 5 some other joints with thin partial cracks and a notable chip to the top of volume 8. Other minor edgewear and occasinoal foxing to prelims but a clean sound handsome set. Occasional tiny stress tears to maps at their hinges but no foxing and the color fresh. An appealing mid-19th century edition of Gibbon's masterwork uncommon in this elaborate binding. John Murray hardcover

Gibbon's seminal work is printed from the edition in 12 volumes includes a 13 page introductory memoir of the author by William Youngman b/w frontis of Gibbon no tissue gaurd. The book begins with the extent and military force of the empire in the age of the Antonines and continues through to chapter 71 in which Gibbons discusses the prospect of the ruins of Rome in the 15th century with a conclusion of the whole work. Half bound in leather and marbled paper the boards are worn on all edges corners scuffed small losses to the marbled paper from both front and rear - see photos. The leather spine is in nice condition soft tan leater with intricate gilt decoration 5 raised bands gilt lettered maroon title label - all very bright. Endpapers are marbled in similar pattern to boards as are all three edges upper edge dulled others bright. Both hinges cracked with front one separating. Front pastedown has a decorative coat of arms bookplate RFEP has small area of loss to lower corner light foxing to end papers and prelims but no foxing throughout. Evidence of historical damp staining on a few pages. Binding is very tight interior very clean 1303 pages with index 7 X 10 inches. The publishers issued the 1789 "new edition" of the first three volumes with first edition copies of the final three as a uniform complete set. The first three were originally published from 1776 to 1781 and reprinted a few times in the same quarto format; this "new edition" is the final in quarto. The latter three volumes published in 1788 are the first and only editions in quarto. Subsequent editions were published in the smaller and cheaper octavo format.
