It covers particularly thehistory of early Christianity and the Roman State Church andthe wider history of Europe and has been praised for the heavy use of primary sources. The technique and writing havebeen used as a model for modern historians. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally generally sound with fading and heavy rubbing to the spines. Heavy rubbing to volume I. Light marks to boards. Some light fading to the boards particularly of volume VII. Loss to spine labels on all volumes with six spine labels detached and missing to volumes I IV V VII and VIII. Front hinge to volume I has failed with board and spine detached from text block. Spine cracked to volume I. Booksellers label to front pastedown of all volumes and personal label of William Sharpeto front pastedown of all volumes excepting volume I. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places with pages 327-330 of volume VI loosening. Folding map to volume Ihas been removed. Folding maps present to volumes II and V. Pages generallybright and clean with the occasional spot. Heavier spotting to frontispiece andtitle page of volume I and to both maps. Some heavier spotting tofirst and last pages of all volumes.
