Sharply distinguishing itself from traditional biographical approaches, it shows how Gibbon both defined himself by his literary work and remained beyond its consoling or resolving formulations, and how he was himself caught up in the ironies for which he is famous. After sketching the conditions of solitude under which Gibbon lived and worked, the author describes how, to bring order to history, Gibbon arranges the material of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by stationing the narrator on a high, Olympian prospect within the work, a position that enables simultaneous moral and narrative command. He locates Gibbon?s attack on the contingent madness of Christianity within a larger scene of cosmic ironies, and examines Gibbon?s nervous attempts to fix and define character, as exemplified in his portraits of Julian, Mahomet, and the Empress Theodora. The author also considers Gibbon?s early work, which laid the psychological and rhetorical foundations of the Decline and Fall. The six rough drafts of Gibbon?s abortive autobiography are compared and analyzed in detail, giving evidence of Gibbon?s struggles to achieve a satisfactory self-image and a generic breakthrough comparable to that of his contemporary Jean- Jacques Rousseau. The final chapter deals with the projects Gibbon took up or contemplated in his search for a new heroic subject after the Decline and Fall; it also records his deepening tranquility in the face of pain and death. Januar 1794 in London) war ein britischer Historiker in der Zeit der Aufklärung. Sein Hauptwerk ist The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Von 1776 bis 1789 veröffentlichte Gibbon die sechs Bände seiner History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, ein Werk im Umfang von ca. 3200 Druckseiten (in modernen Ausgaben), das die Geschichte des Römischen einschließlich des Byzantinischen Reichs von der Mitte des zweiten Jahrhunderts nach Christus bis zur Einnahme Konstantinopels durch die Türken im Jahre 1453 schildert. Die Hauptschuld am Untergang des Römischen Reiches gibt Gibbon dem Christentum, der Dekadenz sowie dem Einbruch der Germanen. Im Byzantinischen Reich sah er eine Fortsetzung und Steigerung dieser Dekadenz, weshalb es seiner Ansicht nach eine orientalische Despotie war, die den Namen "Römisches Reich" nicht verdiente. Im Gegensatz dazu sah er die seiner Analyse nach naturhaft-gesunden jungen Reiche des mittelalterlichen Nord- und Westeuropa. Auch auf die deutsche Geschichtsschreibung hatte Gibbon großen Einfluss. Dieses ist u. a. an der sechsbändigen römischen Geschichte von Wilhelm Drumann zu sehen. Theodor Mommsen hingegen zitierte in seiner "Römischen Geschichte" Gibbon nur einmal und beteiligte sich nicht an den Jubiläumsfeiern.
