Dublin: printed for W. and H. Whitestone J. Williams et al. 1779. First Irish edition 8vo pp. 2 158; removed from binding; very good. Published the same year as the first London edition for which see Rothschild 947. The 15th & 16th chapters of the Gibbon's History which dealt with the growth of Christianity and its part of the decline of the Empire provoked several attacks from minor writers although the church stayed clear of the debate. Gibbon's defence was intended to deal with these irritants and he had it printed in octavo deliberately so that it should not be bound up and preserved with the History. First Irish edition. 158pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf rebacked in modern calf with original lettering piece laid down. Some v. occ. light foxing o/w a clean and sound volume. Very scarce. Norton 32. A reprint of the first London edition with the corrections made. Gibbon unlike many writers did read the criticisms of his works. Copies of many of the attacks on 'The History of the Decline and Fall.' were found in his library when he died. It was an attack by one of the least worthy of his critcs that lead Gibbon to write 'A Vindication'. Davis of Oxford was only twenty-one but it was he who questioned Gibbon's honesty and reliability as an historian. Gibbon felt this was a criminal accusation. "Mr. Davies sic of Oxford presumed to attack not the faith but the good faith of the historian". 'A Vindication.' was priced at 2s 6d and sold out within a few weeks. London: printed for T. Beckett and P.A. De Hondt 1764. First edition in English of Gibbon's first published work 12mo pp. 8 168 including ads; contemporary full speckled calf ruled in gilt leather spine label lettered in gilt previous owner's name written neatly in ink on title else a very good copy. In 1753 Gibbon a young man of twenty-five was sent by his father to Lausanne to study with the Calvinist minister Pavillard and did not return until 1758. By this time he had already begun his Essai sur l'Etude de la Litterature which he finished in England in 1759 where it was published on the urging of his father in 1761. Published in French the work found little audience in England but succeeded apparently abroad and it was reprinted in both Paris and Geneva in 1762. After its publication in English in 1764 it became highly sought after but Gibbon refused to republish it himself. Only one other contemporary edition appeared in 1788 in Dublin which was pirated. Contains a touching 5-page dedication to his father. Bound in contemporary full brown calf gilt rebacked with original spine laid down top compartment and part of bottom compartment replaced in modern calf inner hinges reinforced new e/ps. Corners of bds. worn. Marbled edges and e/ps. Outer margin sl. cropped pages measure 18.4 x 11.2cm. Additional frontis. lightly offset to title. Contents remarkably fresh and clean. Norton 6. Though originally published in French in 1761 Gibbon wrote most of this essay in 1758 while only 21. The translator has never been identified but was probably a professional hired by Becket. Gibbon was not happy with it though it was advertised as being prepared 'under the inspection of the author'. He states "had my feelings been more exquisite I might have wept over its blunders and baldness." Also from his journal January 11th 1763. " From thence I went to Becket paid him his bill fifty-four pounds and gave him back his translation. It must be printed tho' very indifferent. My comfort is that my misfortune is not an uncommon one." One of the 'best' mistakes quoted by Norton is the rendering of "si la physique a ses Buffons" by "if Physics hath its buffoons."
