‎Les ors de l'antiquité ont fait l'objet, en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, de nombreuses expositions qui ont attiré un public considérable. Le colloque publié ici, organisé à l'Ecole normale supérieure par la Société française d'archéologie classique, avait pour but de faire le point sur les recherches récentes qui mettent au jour les relations entre les divers centres de production, sans opposer le monde gréco-romain et celui des civilisations dites "périphériques" ou "barbares" qui ont souvent apporté à celui-ci, outre leur richesse métallique, des éléments techniques non négligeables, tandis qu'ils en recevaient des formes, des thèmes et des décors. En second lieu, les pièces humbles ou magnifiques qui sont présentées ici d'une manière très actuelle basée sur la technique, nous montrent l'importance des ors pour la connaissance des différentes cultures. Enfin on verra que les analyses approfondies conduisent naturellement à l'expertise. Le dernier article démontre comment leur absence à la fin du XIXe siècle a permis l'achat par le musée du Louvre du plus célèbre faux des objets d'or, la soi-disant "tiare de Saïtapharnès", qui prétendait précisément être un joyau "barbare" marqué par la culture grecque.‎
