An investigation of a Roman road-station in its archaeological and geographical context that provides a new perspective on the historical landscape of southern Anatolia. This study is based on fieldwork carried out during the 1990s in southwest Turkey in the modern vilayets of Burdur and Antalya, and it focuses on the settlements associated with a Roman mansio located in the Döseme Bogazi, the pass that linked Pisidia with the coastal region of Pamphylia. The course of the road and the structures that emerged along it were defined not by the evolution of Pisidia's Hellenized indigenous culture but by the priorities of Roman rule, especially during late antiquity. Furthermore, the study of the road where the mansio was located raises fundamental questions about the role played by this mountain pass in the movement of people and animals between the lowlands and highlands of South-west Anatolia.

Twenty Years in Tibet [Hardcover]
Born of a Scottish father and mother of a Sikkimese descent, the author spent the early years of his life in Darjeeling and had his schooling there in the course of which he ultimately mastered Tibetan, Bengali, Bhutanese, Sikkimese, Lepcha, Hindi and Nepali. He joined the Vaccination Deptt. under the Govt. of Bengal and his duties entailed his making regular tours of the villages in the Darjeeling Distt. The 12 years that the author thus spent gave him a comprehensive insight into the manners and customs, and everyday lives, of the peasantry of this part in the Himalayas. In 1904 Col. Waddek took him as his assistant in collecting for the Govt. of India the largest and most complete collection of Tibetan sacred and lay books ever brought to India or Europe. This was during the Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa. From 1905 to 1925 the author was appointed the British Trade Agent in Tibet. The work of the author covers a period of unusual activity and special interest on the North-East Frontier of India. It includes Col. Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa in 1904, the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1910, his return to Lhasa in 1912, and many other incidents of lesser importance. It has been out-of-print for a long time now and we have therefore reprinted it in a limited edition for the benefit of the scholars of Tibetan studies. About The Author:- David Macdonald is an eminent author and is well-conversant with Tibetan language and customs. Having spent two decades in Tibet as British Trade Agent from 1905 to 1925, he gained the expertise of several languages, viz., Bhutanese, Sikkimese Bengali, Lepcha, Nepali and Hindi. He was responsible for a massive collection of Tibetan sacred books which now enrich the collections of the British and Indian museum libraries. A witness to historic Younghusband’s Mission to Lhasa, flight of the Dalai Lama in 1910 and his restoration after two years, Macdonald had academic links, with Sikkim Gazetteer, the Linguistic Survey of India and Tibetan Translation of the New Testament. Boards have light discolored areas mostly to spine and rear board (water-staining? ). ; 148 plates at end. ; Corinth Volume XII; 366 pages; The fifth part of the Corinth volume dedicated to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore publishes the large-scale terracotta sculpture found in the sanctuary. Ranging in date from the late 7th through the 4th century B.C., the sculpture consists of fragments from 132 to as many as 147 statues, from half- to nearly life-size. These are, for the most part, statues of young males, both draped and nude, although females and seated infants appear as well. Several introductory chapters discuss the types represented, the findspots and possible original placement of the sculptures, and the techniques involved in their construction. This volume greatly expands our knowledge of the history of Corinth, broadening our understanding both of cult practices at the site and of the manufacture of terracotta sculpture.
