In a very fine condition. A superb untrimmed copy preserved in the original state and size practically unused for the greater part still unopened. ~ First edition. The inscriptions called "graffiti" today are mostly an unofficial remembrance a self-presentation more often connected with vandalism than with art or socially respected self-expression. Visitors to the pyramids left Greek Latin and Arabic graffiti often next to those from Pharaonic times. To these layers of human presence modern tourist graffiti starting with the 16th century onwards and reaching the peak of their use in 19th century was added. "It is certain that tourists are gradually spoiling the monuments of Egypt by writing their names on them. Persons of taste are irritated when they come across them and the directors of the antiquities exhaust themselves in searching for hard words in which to censure such practices. And yet if the archaeologists and historians of today would reflect a little what fine fellows these inscriptions-makers are and what an amount of ingenious work they are preparing for the students of the future." The Text volume appeared in 1972 as volume LII of the Bibliothèque d'Études. It provides the text volume of a joint Cairo-Brooklyn undertaking and is scarce since years. The Brooklyn Museum published the Plate volume two years later as volume VII in the Wilbour Monographs. ADDED: The rare original extended Corrigenda list to the Text Volume listing 23 corrections and revisions to the "Commentaire et Notes à la Traduction" section. It was issued separately two years after the publication of the book and despite its major importance to the text is often unavailable. ALSO ADDED: In 1982 Dieter Kurth published an extended review of Goyon's book with an long list of faults and omissions in the Plates Volume as well as an extended list of comments on entries in the Text Volume.
