La Piedra del Sol: Calendario Azteca
137 pages unpaginated with black and white and color plates facsimiles 6 plastic calender overlays appendix bibliography and index. Square folio 12" x 12" bound in grey cloth with silver lettering to spine and blind stamped with title in rectangular box to cover. Photographs by Salvador Guil'liem Arroyo. Forewords by Carols Salinas de Gortari and Maria Terresa Franco. First edition.Momentous work on the Aztec calendar stone with new interpretations by this leading scholar on the subject. Included is a review of the most relevant studies about the symbols and iconography contained in the Piedra del Sol and a comparison of it's history with that of La Coatlicue another important monolith of the Mexican culture that was also unearthed in 1790.The Aztec calendar stone is a large monolithic sculpture that was excavated in the Zócalo the main square of Mexico City on December 17 1790. It was discovered while Mexico City Cathedral was being repaired. The stone is approximately 12 feet across and weighs approximately 24 tons. Despite being known as a "calendar stone" modern archaeologists such as those at the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City where the stone is housed believe it is more likely to have been used primarily as a ceremonial basin or ritual altar for gladiatorial sacrifices than as an astrological or astronomical reference.Condition:Jacket rubbed at spine ends else a near fine copy in like jacket. It Ain't Necessarily So : Investigating the Truth of the Biblical Past
Headline 2001. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. In six 30-minute programmes scheduled for transmission in autumn 2001 John McCarthy travels through the Holy Land to examine the validity or otherwise of stories from the Old Testament. Bringing in history archaeology and new research his intriguing journey is the subject of this thought-provoking tie-in which looks at: the truth behind Jericho's 'tumbling' walls; the mystery of the Promised Land; who was Solomon; when did the Jews become monotheists; what was Zion; and when was the text of the Old Testament actually written The book offers fresh sometimes unsettling perspectives on the Bible and its history. Matthew Wallrath
Excavations in the Tehuantepec Region Mexico
Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society 1967 173 pages with figures tables plates maps and appendix. Quarto 11 3/4" x 9 1/4" issued in wrappers. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society New Series volume 57 part 2. 1st edition. Wallrath has written a very large report on a very small dig - three stratigraphic pits a hearth and an oven were excavated. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec has been at least touched by many peoples and cultures and its complex archaeology remains very little known; Wallrath's is therefore a proportionately large contribution to our knowledge of it. The major aspect of interest to many in Wallrath's report will be his use of the Type-Variety Method. He has used the binomial scheme for naming his ceramic units and the results are so sequipedalian as to make it clear that this rather peripheral aspect of the method urgently needs revision. The figures of Tehuantepec many of them highly distinctive are the object of special study; a detailed classification is presented at length. This would have been strengthened by the inclusion of other available published and museum collections from Tehuantepec although it stands as a solid beginning even without them. American Anthropologist:70 1234 Condition: Spine and edges sunned corners bumped slight wear to edges else a very good copy. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Very Good. Quarto.
