Since second century B.C., China exported silk to different countries in the west as far as the countries on the Mediterranean Coast along different routes. Turkey officially launched an undersea commuter train (the Marmaray) connecting the Asian and European sides of Istanbul on Tuesday, 29 October 2013. It seems that the Marmaray is more than just a Turkish project to improve public trans-portation in Istanbul, but part of the Silk Road, which has served humanity for centuries, connecting Asia and Europe. Moreover, this project will revive historical silk road. That road was not only caravan road but a road that links Western and Eastern civilizations. Nowadays China is also planning to make serious investment to revive "the New Silk Road" that will run through Central Asia and continue into Europe facilitating improved transport and trade. Globalization generally refers to the increased interdependence of the world's economies signified by the circulation of information, money, people and goods across national boundaries. It has of late, given rise to the domination of world's market by a selected number of transnational corporations. However, since time immemorial, different countries were related to one another through geographical spread of ideas, social norms and trading commodi-ties. This premodern phase of globalisation is known as "archaic globalization". In the fol-lowing years we will see that the new projects realised by the countries on the historical Silk Road will play a key role on the new integration process between the east and west as well as the north and the south. The papers in this book invite us to rethink and focus on Silkroad.".

"The discovery and rescue of the mosaics of Zeugma, the ancient Greco-Roman crossing point on the Euphrates, is regarded as the most important recent archaeological event. The book comprises some of the pavements on display in Gaziantep Museum, Gaziantep, Turkey. Zeugma, like the rest of the region was destroyed by the Sassanian king Shapur I in 256, when he raided the eastern lands of the Roman empire. Although the town showed some recovery in the early Byzantine period, and still served as a crossing, this was not comparable with its ancient glory. Thus it is not surprising that while the earliest of the mosaics discovered at Zeugma dates from the late first century CE, the latest belong to the period before the destruction. Almost all of the damage seen in the recovered mosaics, especially in the parts made of glass mosaic cubes, is the result of the fire which accompanied the Sassanian sack of 256. Research has shown that the tesserae of these mosaics were mostly produced from the coloured stone collected from the banks of the Euphrates, and supplemented by glass tesserae for missing hues such as dark green, orange, or light blue.".

Light scuffing to DJ spine with 1 small chip. ; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence � since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water � in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli. ; 1.54 x 9.51 x 6.45 Inches; 722 pages .
