‎Urban Practices. Repopulating the Ancient City‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, xii + 172 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:73 b/w, 1 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503584614.‎

‎Summary Cities in the ancient world, much like in the modern era, were not simply a locus for population and a hub for social, cultural, and economic activity, but were themselves the products of urban practices. This volume draws together two often disparate fields - urban space and human practice - to explore the actors and actions that underpinned ancient cities and to offer unique insights into the lives of those who dwelt there. Placing particular emphasis on social practice theory, the contributions gathered together in this book seek to analyse the development of the city, especially public urban spaces, from the archaic period up to Roman Imperial times. A key focus is on infrastructure, public spaces used for politics (particularly the Forum Romanum), and the role of sanctuaries and the way in which they were shaped by cult activity. Through this unique approach, this volume is able, for the first time, to bring the inhabitants of ancient cities to the fore, and in doing so, to offer key insights into the development of spatial routines, the interaction of these routines with the material setting of a city, and the way in which cities themselves played an important role in shaping the people and practices within them. ‎Past as Present. Essays on Roman History in Honour of Guido Clemente‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 810 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:24 b/w, 1 maps b/w, Languages: English, Italian, Spanish. ISBN 9782503585246.‎

‎Summary This volume in honour of Guido Clemente collects essays by nearly 40 established and younger scholars from all over the world, who want to express their gratitude for prof. Clemente's direct or indirect teaching. While the essays included in the volume cover domains ranging from methodology and (the history of) historiography, over archaeology and epigraphy, to politics and religion, they all resort under the main theme of 'the past as present'. This main theme is inspired by a prominent feature of Guido Clemente's scholarly work: the awareness that from the last centuries of the Roman Republic up until Late Antiquity, a sense of the past 'as present' marked the rhythm of everyday life and provided the key to understanding ongoing societal change. ‎Many Faces of the Lady of Elche. Essays on the Reception of an Iberian Sculpture‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 155 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:5 b/w, 36 col., 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503610306.‎

‎Summary On 4 August 1897, farm workers in Elche - the site of ancient Ilici - discovered an Iberian sculpture of a woman that dated from the fifth- fourth centuries BCE. French archaeologist Pierre Paris dubbed this figure 'the Lady of Elche', and promptly purchased the sculpture on behalf of the Louvre Museum. There, she drew the attention of European scholars who were intrigued by her stylistic features, finally concluding that she bore witness to the existence of a specifically Iberian art. Since her discovery, the Lady of Elche has been a source of fascination not only for scholars, but also for artists, and she has become an icon of regional and national identity across Spain. This volume, co-written by an archaeologist and an anthropologist and translated here into English for the first time, seeks to explore the importance of the Lady of Elche, both for students of the past, and for the peoples of Iberia. The authors here explore not only what we know - and still do not know - about her creation, but also engage with key questions about what she represents for the men and women of our time who have questioned, manipulated, admired, loved, and often reinvented the singular beauty of this iconic figure. ‎Funerary Portraiture in Greater Roman Syria‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xviii + 232 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:229 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503576336.‎

‎Summary This volume provides a unique survey of locally produced funerary representations from across regions of ancient Syria, exploring material ranging from reliefs and statues in the round, to busts, mosaics, and paintings in order to offer a new and holistic approach to our understanding of ancient funerary portraiture. Up to now, relatively little attention has been paid to the way in which local and regional production of material in this area formed part of a broader pattern of sculptural and iconographical development across the Roman Near East. By drawing on material from an area encompassing modern Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey, as well as Egypt and Achaia, the contributions in this book make it possible for the first time to take a wider perspective on the importance of funerary portraiture within Greater Roman Syria, and in doing so, to identify influences, connections, and iconographical analogies present throughout the region, as well as local differences, larger-scale boundaries, and ruptures in traditions that occurred across time and place. ‎Polity and Neighbourhood in Early Medieval Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xviii + 430 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:14 b/w, 39 maps, 6 graphs, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581682.‎

‎Summary How were early medieval people connected to each other and to the wider world? In this collection, archaeologists and historians working in very different areas of early medieval Europe explore diverse evidence - from landscape and burial archaeology to charters and chronicles - to discuss the relationships that constituted neighbourhoods and the roles these played in the processes of state formation that can be observed in the peripheries of the Frankish world. What these case-studies teach us, the contributors argue, is that polities are formed not through the exclusive operation of either top-down or bottom-up agencies, but from the interplay between them. By exploring the ways in which local knowledge, social ties, and understandings of landscape interacted with higher-level authorities and institutions, we can gain real insights into the nature of early medieval power and people's experiences of it. Marking the culmination of a collective effort that has spanned over a decade and three funded projects, this volume brings together case-studies from Spain, Italy, England, northern Frankia, Norway, and Iceland to offer a comparative view of polities and neighbourhoods in early medieval Europe. Drawing on new research, and offering new perspectives driven by an interdisciplinary approach, this volume is of relevance to a range of disciplines including archaeology, history, onomastics, geography, and anthropology. ‎Power in Numbers. State Formation and Christianization on the Eastern Edge of Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 308 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:47 b/w, 30 col., 8 tables b/w., 1 tables col., 9 maps b/w, 28 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503608617.‎

‎Summary Around the turn of the first millennium, the political and religious landscape of Central Europe began to change dramatically. As the decentralized pagan societies along its borders became Christian, the polity that later became the Holy Roman Empire began to expand significantly according to the principles of the Imperium Christianum - an idea that first originated with Charlemagne, but that was consciously revived by Emperor Otto I and his predecessors as a way of extending power and authority into the Empire's newly converted eastern fringes. This acculturation was effective, and societies began to actively adopt the new ideology and social order on their own initiative. Drawing on material first presented at conferences held in the Department of Archaeology at Charles University, Prague, this volume draws together researchers working on different yet connected events along the Empire's eastern frontier, and the often-overlooked part of society who nevertheless participated in these events, in particular commoners and the rural population. The papers gathered here cover affairs of the early state and church, networks of archaeological and historical heritage, and archaeological, historical, and digital investigations, to offer a blend of both synthetic archaeological and historical overviews and more focused geographical and thematic case studies that explore the role of Christianization in the centralization processes that occurred at the edge of the Ottonian-Salian world. The result is a forward-looking volume that seeks to explore new approaches to historical narratives, in particular by emphasizing the importance of archaeological material in examining early state formation and religious change. Moreover, it is the first synthetic study to directly compare the north-east and south-east peripheries of the later Holy Roman Empire, making it possible to shed new light on these lands at the periphery of Western Christendom. ‎Trends in Archive Archaeology. Current Research on Archival Material from Fieldwork and its Implications for Archaeological Practice‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, xii + 166 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:71 b/w, 35 col., 2 maps b/w, 2 maps color, Language: English. ISBN 9782503611747.‎

‎Summary Archive archaeology has, in recent years, become increasingly acknowledged as an important component of archaeological research. However, the vast amounts of empirical data contained in such archives - among them fieldwork diaries, working notebooks, finds sheets, and photographs - together with a sense that the field is often skewed towards 'one's own data', have made it difficult to develop a clear methodological approach that fits all eventualities. The result is that archive archaeology is still not always recognized for what it can bring to the discipline of archaeology, as a field of study that focuses on the contexts within which humanity developed. This volume draws together contributions from scholars who work with archives in a variety of capacities: as fieldwork directors of decades-long excavations; as archivists interested in the history of collections; as specialists focusing on certain object groups or regions; and as researchers broadly interested in what archival material brings to the table in terms of new knowledge about archaeological situations. In showcasing contributions of work in progress, the chapters published here bring to the fore knowledge about archives that has long been overlooked, and examine how archival archaeology should be shaped in the future so that it can become more firmly integrated within archaeological practice. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xiv + 212 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:135 b/w, Languages: English, French. ISBN 9782503576350.‎

‎Summary The oasis city of Palmyra in the Syrian Desert has long been the focus of scholarly attention, both as a major cultural locus at the heart of the ancient world, active in trade and politics, and as an important local centre of religion, attested through the archaeology and historical sources related to the site. In this volume, which is the outcome of a conference organized within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project, the latest research from scholars working on Palmyra is drawn together to offer new insights into both the city's religious life and its wider implications for our understanding of religious life in the Near East in general in the first three centuries CE. Incorporating analyses and discussions of archaeological, epigraphic, and literary sources that shed light on Palmyrene religion, the contributions gathered here reassess and discuss the beliefs and practices that were followed in the city, assess the different cults that existed, and present new insights into the development and function of the city's religious communities and spaces. Together, these chapters provide a vital update to our understanding of how people lived and worshipped in this city, which remains crucial to the broader understanding of the role of religion and religious practices in urban contexts in antiquity. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xxxvi + 358 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:357 b/w, 9 col., 25 tables b/w., 9 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581033.‎

‎Summary The Italian brig Mercurio was escorting the French 80-gun vessel Rivoli from Venice on its very first expedition, in 1812, when it was sunk by an English ship during the Battle of Grado. Since the wreck was identified, the Mercurio has been the site of several underwater excavations, beginning in 2001 and continuing from 2004 to 2011 by a team from the Universit Ca' Foscari of Venice, together with the local Soprintendenza. Their work revealed a number of extraordinary finds and provided a unique insight into life - and death - on a brig during the period of the Napoleonic wars. This volume offers a discussion and catalogue of the finds yielded by the Mercurio, including photogrammetry-plans of the bow and stern, together with an analysis of ship-building technique, detail of the equipment and arms used, and, uniquely, close detail of finds connected to the crew themselves. This is one of the few sites from the Mediterranean where human remains have been preserved, and through the work of anthropologists, it has even been possible to try and identify one of the men named on the crew list. Discovery of buttons, footwear, precious items, and even foodstuffs also serve to shed light on the daily life of the crew. This volume thus draws together a wealth of archaeological and historical information to tell the hitherto untold story of the Mercurio. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xxiv + 516 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:322 b/w, 47 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503579955.‎

‎Summary Located along the River Euphrates, in modern-day Syria, el-Qitar was a mountain fortress of the Middle Bronze Age. Excavations, fully analysed in this volume for the first time, revealed extensive fortifications, with two city gates, multiple towers, a fosse, an earthen rampart, and casemate walls, in addition to a public building lined with orthostats of the Middle Bronze Age. After a short time, the site was abandoned and, following a gap of several centuries, re-settled in the Late Bronze Age. It was then that upper and lower settlements were established within the old fortifications, possibly in the wake of Hittite campaigns in Northern Syria that destroyed nearby towns.?Detailed analyses of ceramics and objects explore the possibility that el-Qitar was re-occupied by local refugees. This volume traces the changing function of the site over time, arguing that el-Qitar might have been the site known as Dur Samsi-Addu during the Middle Bronze Age, and Til-Abnu of the Late Bronze Age. The latest construction episode belongs to the modern-day Tishreen Dam.‎

‎Summary The fifth volume of the ARCANE series presents an up-to-date and richly illustrated synthesis of the archaeology of the 3rd millennium BC in the Upper Tigris region of Northern Iraq and South-eastern Turkey, the first to fully include the results of international rescue excavations carried out in both countries in the second half of the 20th century in the framework of dam projects. Written by well-known experts, it revises all aspects of the material culture and history, and proposes a new periodisation and terminology for the region. It thus poses a sound basis for the evaluation of the recently revived archaeological research in Iraqi Kurdistan. Together with the other volumes of the ARCANE series, it will represent an indispensable reference for students as well as for scholars of the Ancient Near East, in particular for those interested in the Early Bronze Age and in inter-regional connections. ‎Ecologies of Crusading, Colonization, and Religious Conversion in the Medieval Baltic. Terra Sacra II‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xx + 246 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:73 b/w, 9 col., 22 tables b/w., 20 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503551333.‎

‎Summary In the thirteenth century, crusading armies unleashed a relentless holy war against the pagan tribal groups of the Eastern Baltic, whose territories were conquered and reorganized into Christian states run by the Teutonic Order, bishops, and their cathedral chapters. Castles were built, towns established, and colonists encouraged to settle under the leadership of the new Christian theocracy. But the changes introduced alongside Christianity not only transformed the culture of eastern Baltic societies, but also had a profound and - for the Baltic tribes, who saw many aspects of the natural world as sacred - deeply significant impact on the local environment. This seminal period in the environmental history of north-eastern Europe has been the focus of the ERC-funded research programme, 'The Ecology of Crusading', which explored the physical and conceptual ecological transformations associated with warfare, colonization, and religious conversion. This second Terra Sacra volume draws together a series of case-studies on Livonia and Prussia that provide a unique snapshot of recent research into environmental change during the Baltic Crusades and also explore long-term trends in landscape organization and environmental exploitation. The volume covers six key themes: building-construction in the conquered territories; food supply to the houses of the Teutonic Order; life in the multi-cultural towns of the eastern Baltic; transforming the physical landscape; transforming the spiritual landscape; and the Baltic Ordensland in its regional context. It forms a companion to Environment, Colonization, and the Baltic Crusader States: Terra Sacra I. This is the first of two Terra Sacra volumes, which share the aim of changing our understanding of the environmental impact of crusading and colonization in northeastern Europe. The present volume provides a detailed inter-disciplinary comparison of the environmental transformations associated with the emergence of the crusader states of Livonia and Prussia. It draws on and integrates a range of archaeological, paleoenvironmental, historical, and cartographic sources in order to highlight the diverse impact of colonization and landscape reorganization that followed in the wake of the Baltic Crusades. The companion Terra Sacra volume complements this survey by presenting a number of case studies from across the eastern Baltic region. ‎Summary While the city of Gerasa - modern-day Jerash - is perhaps best known for the impressive remains left by its Roman inhabitants, the Byzantine and Umayyad periods (fifth-eighth centuries AD) were also eras during which the city blossomed and its population boomed. Pottery production in this period also peaked: excavations over the last hundred years have revealed a vast quantity of ceramic finds, creating a challenge for archaeologists to cope with the sheer quantity of material as they seek to define and refine the typology of local ceramics. This volume presents an in-depth examination of finds from Jerash dating to the Byzantine and Umayyad periods. Through this analysis, it seeks to provide a better understanding of local pottery production and the role it played in the development of the city. The chapters included here explore techniques of production, identify key locations for ceramic work, and examine these developments as part of broader socio-economic patterns within the region. The contributions also analyse other artefacts from the city, including coinage and fine wares, as part of this wider discussion. The volume thus offers a unique academic contribution aimed at bringing to the forefront issues of continuity and change in Jerash in the dynamic period between the fifth and eighth centuries CE. ‎Art and Archaeology of Lusignan and Venetian Cyprus (1192-1571). Recent Research and New Discoveries‎

‎Summary From a Byzantine province to an independent Latin kingdom under the Lusignan dynasty (11929/27-1474/89) and a colonial outpost of the Venetian maritime empire (1474/89-1571), the island of Cyprus, at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, is blessed with a rich and diverse medieval cultural heritage. Its monumental art and its material culture - architecture, fresco and icon painting, woodcarving, metalwork, glazed ceramics, and so on - exist at the crossroads of several artistic traditions often thought to represent mutually exclusive visual languages, such as the late medieval Gothic and Byzantine styles (in their respective variants), the local art of the Levant, and the classicizing mode of the Italian Renaissance. It is precisely this seemingly 'composite' nature of medieval Cypriot artistic production that, over the years, has both divided and united scholars attempting to match styles and forms to the patronage of the various religious, ethnic, and linguistic groups (Latins, Greeks, Syrians, Armenians, and others) making up the island's complex social fabric. The seventeen essays in this volume offer a snapshot of the most recent scholarship on the art, archaeology, and material culture of Cyprus under Latin rule. Established and emerging art historians and archaeologists, both trained Byzantinists and specialists of European medieval art, come together to re-appraise the field in the light of current research, put forward new evidence from fresh archival, archaeological, or archaeometric research, and propose novel interpretations destined to blaze exciting new pathways to future study of this fascinating body of material. ‎Le village de Kafr 'Aqab. tude monographique d'un site du gebel Wastani (Massif calcaire de la Syrie du Nord). Topographie et architecture‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 487 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:502 b/w, 6 col., 2 tables b/w., 5 maps b/w, Languages: French, English. ISBN 9782503583440.‎

‎Summary The new monographic study of the village of Kafr 'Aqab is a contribution to broadening the field of research into the western part of the Limestone Massif in Northern Syria which, until now, had been the subject of only limited interest. The ruins of the site are mainly spread out over a vast rocky headland which is strategically situated at the northern extremity of the gebel Wastani near the Orontes valley in the inland region of Antioch. These ruins reveal the existence of an ancient village with over 80 homes, various communal constructions, a monastery, two ecclesiastic complexes and a fortified building. The study is based on a detailed analysis of surface ruins and has enabled the evolution of the village to be precisely determined from its first phase of occupation between the IInd and IIIrd century until it was abandoned during the medieval period. Most of the constructions date from the Roman and Proto-Byzantine periods. Each architectural group (houses, tombs, churches, agricultural buildings, etc.) is studied separately then resituated in the context of the village and the region thus enabling the author to determine this peasant community's economic, demographic, social and religious history. Mechanisms linked to the growth of the locality are examined in the light of strategies implemented in the appropriation and enhancement of the surrounding land such as controlling water and the diversification of crops which reveals the inhabitants' extraordinary capacity to adapt to their natural environment. Discussion also covers the question of the interactions between the villagers and their relationships with other towns. Kafr ?Aq?b also owed its prosperity to the road network which was ingeniously woven between towns as well as to its proximity to major urban areas in Antioche and Apamea. The ruins reveal this highly favourable location for trade and the circulation of various cultural and artistic movements. Finally, numerous archaeological signs allow the study of the occupation of the village after it was invaded by VIIth century Arab conquerors. The author thus aims to reconstruct the history of this ancient site following a long and fascinating field study. TABLE OF CONTENTS Pr face Avant-propos Introduction Chapitre premier.
