[Exhibition catalogue]. 11 April - 20 July 2019. Artists: Xu Bing, Chen Haiyan, Jian-Jun Zhang, Xing Danwen, Luo Yongjin, Sun Yanchu, Qiu Anxiong, Li Ming, Xu Hongming, Chen Guangwu, Liang Wei, Zhou Fan, and Tang Bohua. Out of Ink: Interpretations from Chinese Contemporary Art explores the essential ideals of the ink painting tradition as manifest in the work of 13 contemporary artists at work in China today. Their art does not necessarily rely upon conventional materials - ink, paper, or brush - but encapsulates the cultural spirit of ink. The experimental forms of expression that underscores their practice are a prism through which to understand how artists are rethinking the conventions of ink to forge new ties to the present cultural context, and enrich this weighty tradition in the process. The exhibition curated by Karen Smith echoes content familiarly seen in ink painting, such as landscapes or natural forms, as single or juxtaposed elements from the natural world, as well as the role of calligraphy. These reveal the spirit of ink, a core value that is its most enduring esoteric quality, yet, none of the artists presented here claim to be ink artists. Instead they work with, appropriate, manipulate, or deconstruct, the spiritual and aesthetic ethos of "ink" as cultural metaphor, philosophical system, and as understanding of relationship between man and the physical world of form and space. In their respective ways, each artist makes a contribution to the future possibilities of a medium that has been the dynamic pulse of the nation's culture through China's long civilization.

New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 389 p., color and b/w ills. Goya, witness of his time. Engravings and paintings.= Goya, zamaninin tanigi. Gravürler ve resimler. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar. Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), known as one of the most unique artists of European painting and a pioneer of modern painting, was introduced to the Turkish audience for the first time with four series of engravings, along with a selection of oil paintings, at the Pera Museum in 2012. Curated by Marisa Oropesa, the exhibition consisted of works from Spain and Italy's leading museums and private collections. As one of the best narrators of darkness, the exhibition united Goya's various oil paintings and engraving series-Caprichos, Disasters of War, Tauromaquia, Proverbs or Follies- that bear witness to a turbulent period in Spain and Europe. The works in the catalogue, besides his career as a court painter and portraitist, explore Goya's extraordinary imagination, along with his reflections of the social circumstances of the era, from a critical perspective. The catalogue seeks to shed light upon Goya's extraordinary imagination with his realistic and at times frightening style that makes him one of the best narrators of darkness separating him from his contemporaries, as his art transcends time, influencing 20th century modernism.

The Russian avant-garde dreaming the future through art and design. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. Edition in English. 191 p., color ills. The Russian avant-garde dreaming the future through art and design. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Nazan Ölcer Head of Sakip sabanci Museum and Dr. Maria Tsantsanoglou, Head of the George Costakis Collection at State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki, and besides the Costakis Collection it contains a selection of 513 works from Moscow's All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts and Multimedia Art Museum and works from leading private collections in Europe shown together for the first time thus shedding a light upon the important place Russian Avant-Garde occupied in the history of art. The 'Dreaming the Future. Russian Avant-garde Art and Design' exhibition does not only focus on the dramatic changes and radical developments that happened during first quarter of the 20th century and prepared the groundwork for intellectual and artistic progress, not just within the Russian artistic culture, but it is designed to hod a mirror to the effect on world art. The exhibition shows the Russian avant-garde artists that in the early 1900s tried to introduce art as a lifechanging power, the ground-breaking work of the artists in this period where the reformist atmosphere had been brought about by the October Revolution in 1917, and the social design they tried to put into practice supported by the new regime and also the wide boundaries of the future they dreamed of. The exciting technological developments and industrialisation that occurred in the early 20th century turned the avant-garde artists towards science and overcoming the boundaries of the earth, dreams of space reflected the beliefs the artists had in the future and tihs is very vividly reflected in the works displayed in this exhibition.

The event of a thread: Global narratives in textiles.= Iplikten çözülmeler: Tekstilde küresel anlatilar. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 236 p., color ills. The event of a thread: Global narratives in textiles.= Iplikten çözülmeler: Tekstilde küresel anlatilar. [Exhibition catalogue]. 'The Event of a Thread' brings together 25 international contemporary artists, who use textile to create aesthetic and cultural narratives through objects, installations and video works. The title of the exhibition is a quotation from On Weaving (1965), the reference book by Anni Albers, one of the most important artists from the Bauhaus textile workshops. Albers believed that socio-cultural and economic activities impacted textiles, and stated that 'Just as it is possible to go from any place to any other, so also, starting from a defined and specialized field, can one arrive at a realization of ever-extending relationships. Thus tangential subjects come into view.?' According to Albers, one could discover 'the event of a thread"' at the root of each development. In the exhibition, weaving threads are utilized as a metaphor, which facilitate the interaction of weaving styles, stories and production techniques from different cultures, and mediate the development of new connections between them. Organized in collaboration with the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa, Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), one of the oldest art institutions in Germany, the exhibition is curated by Susanne Weiss and Inka Gressel on the invitation of ifa and aims to build on the original selection by creating new connections in each institution the exhibition travels to, with the assistance of curators at each institution and the addition of new works from local artists. 'The Event of a Thread' brings together a variety of stories ranging from the tradition of quipu used by ancient Andean cultures in South America to the textile techniques from the indigenous people of Wichi in Argentine and from Bedri Rahmi Eyüboglu's revival and adoption of the long-forgotten tradition of yazma (originally used for hand-painted kerchief) to Burhan Dogançay's tapestries created at the Aubusson workshops. The exhibition focuses on the historical, social and cultural meanings of fabrics, investigates the various uses of textile as a tool of expression and brings together different artistic positions that interact with one another within the exhibition space.

Harbor.= Liman. [Exhibition catalogue]. 8 January - 4 June 2017. Text by Levent Çalikoglu.
New English Paperback 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 215 p., color ills. Istanbul Modern's new exhibition focuses on 'harbor' as a theme of multiple dimensions as the museum occupies a former dry cargo warehouse transformed into a modern museum building right in the area known as the Port of Istanbul. Exploring how port areas are reflected in the visual arts, not only as geographical locations but also as sites of social and economic interaction, the exhibition also delves into the symbolic and metaphorical aspects of the concept of 'harbor'. Emphasizing the relationship of the city of Istanbul with the sea and ports, "HARBOR" takes a close look at the cultural and social life that has developed on the seaside and around ports in the art of Turkey from the nineteenth century to the present. Built on curatorial research in the fields of maritime culture in Turkey, social history, and the visual arts, the exhibition also includes a timeline. Summarizing the history of Istanbul through harbors, from archaeological work on the Harbor of Theodosius (Yenikapi) to the present, the timeline highlights major transformations and turning points in the city's relationship with the sea and ports. The "HARBOR" exhibition catalogue features texts, quotes, photographs, and visuals about the artists and works in the exhibition, as well as essays in which the curators present the conceptual framework of the exhibition. Published bilingually in Turkish and English, the catalogue includes the timeline as well as an article about the ports of Istanbul by Prof. Murat Güvenç, director of the Istanbul Studies Center at Kadir Has University, who advised the exhibition team in preparing the timeline. Built at the Haliç Dockyards in Istanbul, the vessel Bastarda was designed as part of the project "Darzana?: Two Arsenals, One Vessel" for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. It was reconstructed within the scope of the exhibition and is on view in the museum courtyard.

Scenes from Tsarist Russia. 19th century Russian classics from the State Russian Museum Collection.= Çarlik Rusyasi'ndan sahneler. Rus Devlet Müzesi Koleksiyonu'ndan 19. yüzyil Rus klasikleri. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 192 p., color ills. 'Scenes from Tsarist Russia: 19th Century Russian Classics from the State Russian Museum Collection, not only presented art lovers with a selection of masterpieces being displayed for the first time in Turkey, but also offered scenes of Russian history through Russian Realist paintings. The masterpieces from the rich collection from the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg reflected every aspect of life including labour and poverty, the world of children, public festivals, war and death, scenes from bourgeois life, and revolution. In literature, music, and fine arts, the "Russian spirit" is depicted as a world of emotions in which love, sorrow, and death run rampant. After the 1860s, Realist conventions came to dominate the genre scenes. Progressive artists of Russia began portraying the fundamental problems of the period such as social injustice, serfdom (until 1861, peasants were considered as property of landowners in Russia), child labor, subjugation of women, and poverty. Daily life hence became a point of interest in art. In the 1870s and particularly after the 1880s, a more positive attitude came into view; the artists gradually diverged from depicting painful worlds. The public was no longer the victim, but a powerful subject. A tendency to poeticize folklore, as well as the public perception of nature and the universe began to emerge. Social problems were addressed in their entirety; analysis replaced condemnation. The exhibition, which included artists from Repin to Makovsky, Yaroshenko to Shishkin along with many others, presented not only Russia of the period with all its different aspects, but with its themes and characters the exhibition offered audiences a unique experience, one similar to reading the works of the great Russian writers such as Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoevsky.'.
